Agnieszka Radwanska and Eugenie Bouchard were the two players that survived the second round of action at the Qatar Total Open Tuesday as plenty of other big named players fell short against lower ranked athletes. Coco Vandeweghe took down seventh ranked Belinda Bencic in a straight set victory over the Swiss star 6-4, 6-2.
World No. 4 ranked Simona Halep joined the list of defeats with Russia’s Elena Vesnina getting the massive win in three sets 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-1.Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber still felt the hangover and paid the price against Saisai Zheng in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.
The third ranked Pole and last season WTA champion did well against Kateryna Bondarenko in straight sets making her break early in he sets before playing defense against the Ukrainian before winning 6-4, 6-4 in 93 minutes. It was her first win in two weeks since losing out in the quarterfinals in Melbourne.
While she had a smooth run in her second round match, Bouchard wasn’t so lucky as her struggles to dominate came back. She got into a tradeoff with Denisa Allertova in the first set that set up a tiebreaker she knocked out of the park. The Canadian went flawless to seven points not allowing the Czech a single one. Bouchard once again had to work hard in the late stages of the second set but came out a winner at 7-5.
She’ll get a huge break in the third round facing Zheng where she has won twice against the Chinese star. Zheng had to play very hard in the opening set against Kerber where a fight back got her evened up in the tenth before holding control and winning the set 7-5. The second was a complete destruction of the German as she had nothing to show on court letting Zheng get free points and have a better run to her 6-1 second set sweep pulling off the upset.
Bencic found herself struggling against the American who was looking for a chance to break out her strong serve and attack the competition. She broke ahead after leveling with the Swiss teen before getting the upper hand in the match. Her confidence played a role in the second set where she took apart the competition and walked away with her biggest win of the season beating Bencic 6-2.
With fatigue playing a role in many of the upsets, it certainly made the case for the Romanian in her defeat against Vesnina that took 2:21 to finish. She had the Russian star on her tail from the start of the set to the finish. By the time it went to a tiebreaker, she held things together blowing the Russian out in a 7-1 victory.
It seemed to take a toll on her with all the effort as she had a lead and then suddenly lost it giving Vesnina a leg up in the match making a third set necessary. It was there that Vesnina had everything going for her while the recent injury Halep suffered was taking away her energy to compete.
With three top seeds falling out of the tournament, it left things wide open for Radwanska or fifth seeded Petra Kvitova to take control of their brackets and possibly set up a super star final but plenty action was left to go beginning the round of 16 on Wednesday.
