The 2016 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship on the European Tour is taking place this week from January 21-24, 2016, at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club located in the capital city of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. The big news for the 2016 Abu Dhabi Golf Championship is that both the #1 ranked player in the world in Jordan Spieth and the #3 ranked player in the world in Rory McIlroy are playing here this week. They are headlining a great field that also includes Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and many other great players in the world today.
The total prize money up for grabs is just $2.7 million. That is less than half the prize fund that a typical PGA Tour event would offer but top players like Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler get huge appearance fees just to play in Abu Dhabi. The top players likely get $1 million or more in appearance fees just to play here this week. Tiger Woods used to get up to $3 million to appear in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.
While the European Tour lists the prize fund at $2.7 million in US dollars they also list the individual prize money for each finishing spot in Euros.
