Birthdays, holidays, and the end of the school year normally include numerous cards, certificates, and other keepsakes. After making the difficult decision about which items to keep and which items to toss, parents and kids will need a special place to store those priceless treasures. Creating a special container for storing childhood memories is a fun craft project. Following a birthday, after a holiday, or at the end of a school year is the perfect time to create an “All About You Box”.
a shoe box (or any storage container with a lid)
colored tissue paper
photos (that can be cut or altered)
crayons, markers, or washable paint (with a paint brush)
Help children use the materials listed to decorate a shoe or craft box, incorporating his or her name and a photo into the design. Use the “All About You Box” to store birthday cards, guest lists, holiday cards, invitations, party favors, photos, small keepsakes, and ticket stubs from special events. Kids could also decorate large boxes for storing larger items like toys.
Variations of the “All About You Box” include creating a box especially for art work or small crafts. A box for well done school assignments provides a special place to store a child’s best work. Decorating boxes for individual holidays would provide children the opportunity to complete meaningful craft projects several times throughout the year.
A short cut for creating an “All About You Box” is to use pre-printed wrapping paper. Match the paper on the box to the theme of its contents. Use birthday paper for birthday keepsakes. Use holiday paper for holiday keepsakes. Use solid colors or paper printed with a child’s favorite things (balloons, cartoon characters, flowers, hearts, etc.) for school related items and other themes. Pre-printed paper can be customized by embellishing it with bows, buttons, glitter, ribbon, and/or yarn. Attaching a photo to an “All About You Box” then creating a faux frame for it made with glitter glue and/or other 3D objects personalizes it and makes it extra special.
