Spreadsheets and data are a daily part of work for millions of people. Now technology is making it easier than ever for individuals to keep track of their data and one such program with this purpose is called Popily.
Popily, a tool that lets you instantly explore your data visually, publicly launched on Tuesday, January 19th. A graduate of Techstars Cloud 2016, Popily intelligently creates tons of interactive charts from your spreadsheets and data, saving you hours of work. With Popily, users never have to make a chart again, ever. Recently Vidya Spandana, a co-founder of Popily, spoke with the Examiner about her experiences working with the company and her hopes for its future:
Meagan Meehan (M.M.): How and when were you inspired to start your company?
Vidya Spandana (V.S.): The three of us co-founders had been working together at Ushahidi (a tech NGO based in Kenya) on data-related projects and we kept hearing the same thing over and over again. All sorts of new complicated data science platforms were popping up – and we had been building them ourselves (CrisisNet)–but all this technology was serving a surprisingly tiny group of people. Turns out everybody needs a simple and fast tool to make sense of data, but there weren’t tools built for everyday users. So we started Popily.
M.M.: Why did you choose the name Popily?
V.S.: It was easy to say, sounded friendly, and we had the domain name. It was the quickest decision we made, we didn’t want to over complicate it.
M.M.: How, exactly, does your company work?
V.S.: Popily is a SaaS product – a tool that instantly creates tons of intelligent charts from a spreadsheet or database, giving you a visual representation of data in your browser. Popily works by first trying to understand what type of information is in each column of your database and/or spreadsheet. It then does some basic analysis of each column and compares each column with every other column in the dataset. Finally, it intelligently decides the best visualization to use to communicate the results of its analysis. It does all this instantly and automatically so that people can spend their time exploring data visually and not spend hours trying to make charts that look good. Drop in a spreadsheet or connect a database, Popily creates tons of charts, pick out the most interesting charts and share them easily via an image, an embed, or a link. After a 7-day free trial, people can get basic features for a monthly subscription of $9 or advanced features for a monthly subscription of $59.
M.M.: Thus far, what has been the most rewarding part of working for this organization?
V.S.: Well first off, I get to work with my friends. It’s a real blast to build something meaningful, has potential for massive scale, and have a great time with your buddies while creating something that people need. The next thing would be seeing people make discoveries in their data; it’s always exciting to be a part of that.
M.M.: Where do you hope the company will be ten years from now?
V.S.: Ha! We hope that in ten years, Popily technology will be seamlessly augmenting everyone’s daily decisions with data. Informed people make better decisions, we would love to see Popily lead the way in giving people access to information they didn’t have access to ever before.
M.M.: Are there any upcoming projects and/or events that you would like to mention?
V.S.: We are currently in the Techstars Cloud 2016 program and we are looking forward to presenting on stage at Demo Day on February 11.
