It was not noon, the most frequent time of crime in Atlanta–nor did it occur at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport, but the attack on a mother and her college-age daughter in the parking lot at a Hampton Inn near Kennedy Airport in New York could have been someone from the Peach State. As it was, the 53-year-old victim, Andrea Koller, was shot in the chest when she fought off a black ski-mask-wearing assailant who had just pistol-whipped her 20-year-old daughter. And now the mother is in critical condition and the daughter had to have staples put into her head from the assault.
The two women had arrived in town from Baltimore on Thursday evening in order to secure a room for the night in preparation for Koller’s daughter’s flight the next day. The Lehigh University student from Pennsylvania was planning to study abroad in Cape Town, South Africa, and the two needed some sleep before the Friday morning departure time. The mother had left her daughter sitting in the vehicle parked right outside the entrance to the Hampton Inn as she went inside to secure their room. A black-clothed and black-mask-wearing perpetrator gained entrance to the vehicle, stealing rings off the daughter’s fingers and pistol-whipping her in the process, as he threatened her life after moving the car to another location in the parking lot.
Once the mother exited the Inn and found where her car had been moved, the assailant exited the vehicle and met her head-on, where a struggle ensued after she refused to give him her purse. She was shot in the process and the suspect fled to a waiting car, leaving her and her injured daughter behind with her purse in his possession, according to the Associated Press.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m., according to a CBS News account. Police are continuing to search for the black 5-foot, 11-inch tall male assailant who fled in a 2010 White Volkswagen Jetta vehicle, who they believe, along with others, is behind several similar type robberies. The other robberies also occurred in the Jamaica area and involved robberies on individuals who either were standing behind a local hotel at the time of the encounters or sitting in a parked car at a local inn.
For the latest crime news trends in Atlanta since 2009, check out this AJC report, which shows that crime in Atlanta is predominantly non-violent, occurs the most around the noon hour, and decreased significantly in 2015. In comparison, New York’s crime stats have come under fire recently by some experts who say the crime rate drop in burglaries are questionable due to who the crime is counted statistically. And the recent shooting at the Hampton Inn near Kennedy Airport shows that perhaps the crime rate is growing again, if it was not skewed as alleged.
