For a moment, forget about Rory McIlroy and Jason Day playing match play on Sunday morning. You don’t have to be one of the PGA Tour pros to play golf in Austin this week. In fact, with Dell as the title sponsor of the World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play, which is taking place in Austin on March 21-27, 2016. The golfers will be swinging their drivers and wedges during the Match Play, but you may see others around Austin and the U.S. swinging their iPhones and Android devices.
It’s all because of Dell’s new app, Dell Play Through, which was introduced at SXSW. This is a golf app like you’ve never seen before. With development help from Golf Channel’s Matt Ginella, Play Through lets you play golf on the streets of Austin. If you’ve even been to Austin, you know what a cool city it is, and it’s even cooler when you play golf by such landmarks like the Paramount Theater, Franklin BBQ, the Texas State Capitol and The Driskill Hotel. A nine-hole course is set up in and around Downtown Austin and thanks to technology, anyone can test their skill. The Driskill has been around for 130 years, but it has never been part of a golf course, so this app is fun and unique. Let’s call it the “Austin Open.”
“This app for Dell is really about putting technology in the hands of our customers,” states Liz Matthews, executive director-corporate brand and purpose at Dell. “By turning the city of Austin into a real-time, data-driven golf course, we have created an interactive experience where people can learn about the city of Austin while playing.”
You are playing the course from street-view, so golfers can expect surprises around each and every corner. The landmarks of Austin are your fairways, hazards and greens. Invite friends. Share your score. And make people wonder why you’re swinging your phone like that. Players can actually swing their phone like a golf club or use a finger to simulate the swing right on the app screen.
On Dell’s blog, it’s all about preparing for the future. “At Dell, we believe that technology has always been about enabling human potential and helping businesses be Future Ready. This approach extends even to golf, which is why we are providing to anyone with an Android or iOS smartphone the opportunity to play golf through the streets of our hometown Austin.”
This app is a small part of Dell’s role as the title sponsor of the World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play, in Austin. This app is challenging and makes for great time filler as you wait at the doctor’s office or DMV. It’s also addictive, just like the sport of golf itself. Real-time Austin data like weather and wind speed will show up in the game as will bar and restaurant reviews. The PGA Tour has a new breed of golfer trotting down the courses in 2016, and this is a new breed of app. One that is both educational and entertaining, with a little skill thrown in for good measure.
