There are four ways one can learn what God’s advice is for his/her life, according to Pastor Perry Noble in a recent article in the Christian Post. Noble, who is leader of NewSpring Church in Anderson, South Carolina provided four ideas how one can discover what God’s advice is in his Sunday sermon.
He said one effective method is to read the Bible. He said by reading the Bible one can focus on what God actually says rather than what we “want God’s will to be”. Garth Brooks’ country and western song which goes, “Thank God For Unanswered Prayers”, refers to a situation in which a person unwisely prays for what he wants in his youth. Later, the person realizes it was a good thing that prayer was not answered as he met someone who was better for him than the girl he was wanting. In the song the young man’s girlfriend has broken up with him, and he prays to God he can have her back. But she never comes back. Later in life, he mets a woman who turns out to be a wonderful wife. Later, at a class reunion, he sees the girl of his youth again and realizes she wasn’t anything like he’d thought she was.
Another way to search for God’s advice is through the Holy Spirit. Noble said the Holy Spirit is in all of us, frequently serving as our conscience. The New Testament relates a story in which Jesus tells his disciples not to despair when He ascends back to Heaven, because He would leave the Holy Spirit behind to comfort and guide them in his absence. That story is found in the Gospel of John 16:5, which reads in pertinent part, “Now, I am going to Him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, “Where are you going? Because I have said these things you are filled wih grief. But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away the the Counselor (Holy Spirit) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.”
Noble mentioned a third way is to enjoy fellowship through other believers. The pastor further said that God will use the Christian community to convey his advice to people. He said, “If you’re in a conversation with a friend and they say something that is consistent with Scripture and speaks directly to a situation you’re in or something you’ve been wrestling through, theat’s the voice of God. You are hearing him speak through your friend.”
A fourth method referred to by Noble is His Church, saying, “God uses his His Church to speak to us…..The Church has existed and grown for over 2,000 years because God has used it to speak to the potential of his people.”
The pastor also included pertinent parts of his message in a recent Perry Noble blog.
The church did begin with only 12 disciples and then spread rapidly in the first century with approximately seventy apostles taking the Word by foot around the Ancient World. Today, in the modern world of technology more people can learn of Jesus Christ and his Gospel in only a matter of a few moments.
