Three years ago, gamers were anything but prepared for the horror experience that was “Outlast” the video game for X Box, PlayStation, and PC. “Outlast” was the ultimate gaming experience for the thrill-seeking video gamer with a penchant for quality gore and jump-scares. Fall of 2015, a trailer teased its sequel, “Outlast II,” which is set to release September 2016. In the trailer, we were welcomed by the disturbing image of a cross engulfed in flames, which rotated to form an inverted cross. After the camera panned out to show the overturned cross, a night vision filter flickered to reveal numerous glowing eyes peering from the darkness. This unsettling imagery was accompanied with the voice of an elderly man ominously reciting Biblical scriptures as follows:
“And there followed an angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink the wine of the wrath of her fornication. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever. Then I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the Mount Zion, saying with a loud voice, ‘Fear God, give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment… has come!'”
“Outlast” was a brilliantly crafted first-person survival horror video game developed by Red Barrels. In the game, you act as free-lance journalist, Miles Upshur, investigating Mount Massive Asylum for unethical experimentation of its patients. The player had to guide Miles through the horrors of the asylum, narrowly avoid its deranged patients, and uncover the mysteries of the asylum.
Taking place in the same universe as it predecessor, “Outlast II” will be set after the events of the Mount Massive Asylum Slaughter, which was an incident that occurred prior to the events in the first game. Red Barrels posted a cryptic video on April 4, 2016, titled, “Jude 1:14-15,” which included the same eerie voice from the first trailer reciting the scripture and the date April 22, 2016. The date mentioned referred to PAX East 2016 where Red Barrels was scheduled to showcase. From April 22-24, a playable demo of “Outlast II” was showcased, during which, a handful of people were given access to the full demo.
According to the “Outlast II” demo opening, you play as cameraman Blake Langermann and his wife Lynn, a journalist duo investigating the murder of an unidentified pregnant woman. Their investigation leads them to the Arizona desert, but they get separated and stranded in a village of hostile cult members. The players’ goals are to find Blake’s wife and escape from the villagers.
“Outlast” has been highly acclaimed for its fantastic graphics, phenomenal design, voice acting, and chilling atmosphere. The release of “Outlast II” will certainly be something to look forward to this fall.
