Numbers for the 88th Academy Awards are still being tallied, but if they don’t increase by much, the annual ceremony has hit an 8-year low. Could the #OscarSoWhite controversy be to blame? It certainly isn’t because of Chris Rock. The comedian rocked his host gig! Audiences, both present at the Oscars and sitting at home, loved Rock’s performance. Deadline broke the ratings report this morning.
Rock’s monologue (which you can watch above) was one of the most anticipated openers in Oscar history. Audiences couldn’t wait to hear what Rock had to say about the controversy and why he decided to not give up his hosting gig after several fellow celebrities suggested that he quit. Chris Rock came out with punches, delivering a good medium. Rock understands why so many stars protest the Oscars, but he also doesn’t think this should be a huge deal. The biggest punch of the night though, was his comment about Jada Pinkett Smith.
“Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited,” Chris Rock said, causing several stars to gasp in shock while others erupted in laugther.
It was a great monologue that was followed by ever greater moments. Brie Larson took home the much-deserved Best Actress award. And Leonardo DiCaprio was finally able to snag his overdue recognition of Best Actor. What wasn’t so great about this night are the ratings.
The 88th Academy Awards declined to an 8-year low 6% down from last year. Before this year, Neil Patrick Harris’ Oscars in 2015 and the 2011 Oscars were matched for the third worst the Academy Awards has done. We’ll update the numbers, hoping for better results, after they’re all added up.
