Leonardo DiCaprio has finally joined the ranks of Oscar winners!
After six previous nominations for everything from “The Aviator” to “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” and zero previous wins, the star of the critically acclaimed 2015 film “The Revenant” took home the 2016 Academy Award for Best Actor at this year’s event. At the very end of the Oscars 2016 extravaganza, the 41-year-old thespian was recognized by the Academy, his name now forever a part of the Oscar winners roll call for his role as nineteenth-century frontiersman Hugh Glass.
Social media lit up at the news, especially celebrity Twitter. Ellen DeGeneres tweeted, “He did it! He really did it! #LeoDiCaprio, I love you.” Ever one to get in one any awards show action, Kanye West tweeted, ” Finally!!! Our guy!!!We;re so so happy for Leo!!!” (It would seem Twitter agrees with Ellen and Kanye: Kanye’s tweet had more than 50,000 retweets just thirty minutes after being posted, while Ellen’s was favorited more than 30,000 times in under an hour.)
DiCaprio was impassioned as he gave his very first Academy Awards acceptance speech, and chose to focus not on his long awaited and no doubt incredibly satisfying win, but on congratulating the other nominees, thanking his costars and team, and using his platform to speak on important global issues. “Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat affecting our entire species. We need to support leaders around the world… who speak for all of humanity.”
The Oscar winner continued, “I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take this award for granted,” DiCaprio said, before the crowd was back on their feet in a standing ovation in acknowledgment not only of his much anticipated win, but of his poignant and compelling words.
