Chris Rock hosted the 88th annual Oscars at the Dolby Theater on Sunday, Feb. 28. The comedian addressed the #OscarsSoWhite controversy during his opening monologue. The funny man took swipes at Hollywood, Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith and delivered on joke about Stacey Dash that fell flat. Many of the audience tuned out this year due to a nationwide Oscar’s boycott which delved the lowest rated Academy Awards broadcast in eight years with 34 million viewers. “Mad Max Fury Road” was the biggest winner of the night with six awards. Leonardo DiCaprio’s win for “The Revenant” was the most tweeted moment ever in Oscar history beating Ellen’s selfie group photo. “Spotlight” also took home Best Picture and an award for director Todd McCarthy who co-wrote the screenplay.
The stars wore bright hues of ruby, orange and emerald green with Hollywood starlets wearing their best looks on the red carpet. Here is our recap of the best and worst dressed of the night. Charlize Theron wore our favorite Oscars outfit. The Academy Award winner was stunning in a red Dior gown, while wearing 4 million dollars worth of Harry Winston jewels. “Brooklyn” star Saoirse Ronan wore a green Calvin Klein slip gown to pay tribute to Ireland. Margo Robbie dazzled in a gold sequin Tom Ford dress and Forevermark jewels. Olivia Munn also stood out on the carpet in an orange Stella McCartney column gown with a trendy orange lip and Forevermark diamonds. Kerry Washington decided to take a fashion risk with a leather bodice Versace dress. Naomi Watts sparkled in an ombre sequin and Swarovski crystal Armani Prive gown. “Star Wars” actress Daisy Ridley opted for a silver Chanel gown. Oscar winner Julianna Moore wore a fresh off the runway beaded Chanel gown. Lady Gaga also decided to wear a trendy white corset jumpsuit skirt combo designed by her stylist Brandon Maxwell. The Oscar nominee changed into another outfit for her stage performance of “Til It Happens To You.”
Embellishments were a big red carpet trend. Alicia Vikander looked like Belle from Beauty and the Beast. The Best Supporting actress winner wore a yellow Louis Vuitton gown with a tulip hem. Cate Blanchett got mixed reviews in her sea foam green Armani Prive haute couture gown with feathers. Chrissy Teigen wore a sleek Marchesa gown over her growing baby bump. Emily Blunt also covered her curves in a pink Prada gown. Comedian Kevin Hart donned a Dolce & Gabbana tux encrusted with jewels. Spotlight actress Rachel McAdams showed some skin in her August Getty halter neck gown. The “Spotlight” actress hired Jennifer Lopez’s stylist to up her sex appeal. Sofia Vergara flaunted her hourglass figure in a mermaid cut gown. Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon chose a purple Oscar De La Renta gown. Olivia Wilde wore a Valentino couture gown with a plunging neckline and a Neil Lane choker.
Some celebs wore some of the most unflattering outfits. Heidi Klum made us scratch our heads in her Marchesa gown. We were confused about the one covered arm and multiple flowers. Rooney Mara also missed the mark in her cut-out Givenchy couture dress. Jennifer Lawrence wore a Dior gown. Brie Larson failed to impress in her Gucci gown. Amy Poehler and Charlotte Rampling wore dressed that did not fit the event. Poehler’s Andrew Gn cape dress was a definite fashion misfire. We loved Mindy Kaling’s Elizabeth Kennedy dress from the front. Unfortunately, the huge bow did not help it in the back. Celebrities flocked to the Vanity Fair Oscar party which was the hottest ticket of the night. Many of the guests including Kerry Washington, Jennifer Lawrence and Sophia Vergara changed their outfits for the bash. Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Lorde, Miranda Kerr, Emily Ratakowski, Gigi Hadid, Alicia Vikander, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton celebrated at the soiree.
