Oscar de la Renta: The Retrospective at the de Young Museum

Think style icons and Oscar de la Renta surely is at the forefront of beauty, optimism, and confidence having changed the world through a refined sense of couture. From models to muses the likes of Sophia Loren, Claudia Cardinale, Ingrid Bergman, and other divas from the 60s and 70s, who became enamored by the sense of style of the highly influential designer. Fellow designers and photographers were influenced the fashion god. On March ??? to follow the ascent of the impresario master designer at San Francisco’s De Young Museum.

The De Young retrospective boasts De La Renta’s early years in Spain when the creative designer first gained notoriety. Onward to his formative years, the exhibit pays tribute to the beloved clothing mogul and how the fashion icons perspective influenced the world’s star studded, couture houses. The vanguard fashion mogul and fast forward couture icon, De La Rena might be the most influential couture designer, influencer and celebrity personality of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The exhibition at the de Young Museum will include over 100 ensembles spanning over five decades of the master captured the world of design.
The garments are organized into several thematic sections: early work; Spanish, Eastern, Russian and garden influences; daywear and eveningwear; and ball gowns and red carpet ensembles. The presentation traces his rise and role as designer for many of the most influential and celebrated personalities of the 20th and 21st centuries. Gowns worn by former First Lady Laura Bush, former Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton, Sarah Jessica Parker, Taylor Swift, Penélope Cruz and Amy Adams will be among those on view.

About Oscar de la Renta
Oscar de la Renta (1932-2014) left his native Dominican Republic at the age of eighteen to study painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. While living in Spain, he became interested in the world of design and began sketching for leading Spanish fashion houses, which soon led to an apprenticeship with Spain’s most renowned couturier, Cristóbal Balenciaga. Later, he left Spain to join Antonio Castillo as a couture assistant at the house of Lanvin in Paris. In 1963, he came to New York to design the couture collection for Elizabeth Arden. In 1965, Oscar de la Renta founded his signature ready-to-wear label and is among the world’s most prestigious fashion brands.
