The Ontario Fury defeated the Sacramento Surge in a rubber match Saturday night 10-8. Both clubs brought their offensive game to the table as they combined for eighteen goals. Neither defense was able to stifle the attacking strikers but the Fury lead by forward Mauricio Salles’ four goal were enough to pull ahead for the win. Sacramento Surge midfielder Anibal Echeverria recorded a hat trick plus one whilst birthday boy Matt Germain notched a brace in the loss.
A capacity crowd filled up the Estadio Azteca Soccer Arena to watch the Sacramento Surge take on their Pacific Division rivals from down south the Ontario Fury. The Fury are battling the Tacoma Stars and San Diego Sockers for post season playoff seeds whilst the Surge was looking for their second win. The first quarter was a quiet one as Sacramento scored midway when Matt Germain kicked in a shot that went past the arms of goalie Sanaldo Freitas de Carvalho to take a 1-0 lead. Ontario defender Robert Tornel scored an equalizer a minute later to even things up at 1-1.
The Fury opened up the second quarter with three straight goals, lead by Mauricio Salles who scored two taking a 4-1 lead. Sacramento countered with scores from Anibal Echeverria and Alex Paz making it a 4-3 match. Both clubs would continue to counter each other with a pair of goals each (Norman Levesque and Echeverria’s second) to end the half with Ontario holding on to a 6-5 edge. The Surge came out of the locker room with a renewed vigor as they took to the artificial pitch for the third quarter.
Anibal Echeverria scored his third goal of the match in the fourth minute to knot it up at 6-6. The tie however would be broken fifty seconds later when Fury defender Nelson Santana scored on a power play opportunity from a blue card given to Surge midfielder Ali Radmand giving Ontario a 7-6 lead. They would add to it three minutes later from a penalty kick goal by Mauricio Salles. Sacramento midfielder Matt Germain’s second score of the night made it 8-7 match heading into the fourth quarter.
Mauricio Salles’ fourth goal of the evening came in the second minute of the final quarter as the Surge were down by two scores. The home club rallied the troops and continued to pressure the Fury’s defense. Echeverria scored his fourth goal of the night a few minutes later to shorten the lead to 9-8. But Ontario would add another score five minutes later off of a power play opportunity from a blue card issued to Sacramento midfielder Carlos Carranza to seal the win with a 10-8 victory.
