The Sacramento Surge played their first of two back-to-back road games Friday night against the Ontario Fury. Sacramento was looking to win their first match on the road this season whilst Ontario’s trying to keep up with the rest of the Pacific Division’s playoff race. The Surge’s last meeting with the Fury was a close one as they lost 10-8 last Saturday night. But with a rabid crowd of over four thousand fans inside the Citizens Business Bank Arena, it looked like a long night for the scrappy Surge.
Ontario came out fast out of the gate in the First Quarter with two goals from forward Tino Nunez and defender Robert Tornel taking an early 2-0 lead. Sacramento’s defense settled down in the Second Quarter and kept the Fury out of the net. Surge midfielder Anibal Echeverria scored a goal off of a power play from a blue card issued to Fury’s Tiguinho Dias for an illegal slide tackle. Neither club would score again as the quarter ended at the half with Ontario holding on to a 2-1 advantage.
The Third Quarter was an even affair for the first eight minutes until the Fury blew the match wide open when forward Mauricio Salles scored two straight goals, followed by Tino Nunez’s second score of the night and another goal from defender Kiley Couch to take a commanding 6-1 lead into the Fourth Quarter. Sacramento would strike back early in the final quarter with goals from midfielders Jesus Valenzuela and Matt Germain, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Fury’s Couch scored his second goal of the night but was countered by a score from Surge defender Michael Randolph making it a 7-4 match. Ontario however would take over the final five minutes by scoring three straight goals to ice the match 10-4 for the victory.
The Sacramento Surge will be traveling further down south Saturday night to face off against Baja Atletico at 7:05 P.M. at the Unidad Deportiva Tijuana. Their next home match will be Saturday, February 6 against the Turlock Express. Tickets can be purchased either at the door or via the club’s official website.
