Rumple: “The underworld is worse than you can possibly imagine. It’s going to make you wish the old stories of fire and brimstone were true. It’s going to make you wish for death, and then the realization will hit that death has already come, and this fresh torture is all that’s left.”

You guys, we got Killian backstory, and it was amazing. We had met his brother, but now we met Killian’s dad. Turns out, Papa Jones is a bit of a jerk. He acted all fatherly, but in the end, he abandoned his kids and solved them into servitude in order to save himself. Talk about selfish. It was great that we were able to meet Papa Jones, but some parts of his story just didn’t add up.
He and his wife fell in love while he was unconscious. That’s a little awkward, and how do you fall in love with someone who just lies there? Sure, you can think they are pretty and all, but that’s not love, and it’s definitely not true love Also, we never got an answer as to how Papa Jones was able to cheat death. A sleeping curse could have prolonged life, but it wouldn’t make him immortal.
Killian was probably right in thinking that his dad didn’t change. How twisted is it to name your third child after the first one that you abandoned and sold into slavery? Why would anyone do that? There’s something in Papa Jones’ head that just isn’t quite right.
One great thing about Killian’s backstory was that it was what Regina used to help Killian see the light. Regina isn’t the obvious choice here, so it was great that she was the one trying to get through to Killian. However, it would have been nice if maybe Henry made an attempt or two. After all, the two of them had bonded quite a bit.
Zelena’s presence has always been a little strange. She can provide some great comedic moments, but other than that, she’s been useless. That being said, it was really strange how quickly she went away. There was all this talk on how maybe having a child would change her, but then Robin and Regina changed their minds. It’s like it became obvious that she wouldn’t have a place in the story anymore, so it was time for her to take a trip. What did you think of Zelena’s departure?
Killian’s death was a tad too overdramatic. The build up to his death went on a little too long, and then we had to see him being put in a body bag. Yes, it’s sad. Yes it’s painful, but can we not drag it out? There’s no need for that.
There’s also not a need for such obvious Snowing parallels. Snow White and Prince Charming have a love that’s not like anyone else’s, so let’s not try to make Captain Swan into them. The sharing a heart bit is actually a smart idea as far as how to get Killian out of the underworld, so that’s okay.
What’s not is Emma echoing Snowing’s theme song: “I will always find you.” Personally, it’s a little weird and kinda sick to say something to your true love that you hear your parents say to each other. Plus, we already had the share a heart connection, there’s no reason to pile on the Snowing parallels.
The biggest shocker of the hour was that Rumple is back to being the Dark One. This was a great twist for shock value, but when you think about it, it’s actually kind of annoying. We had made all this progress with Rumple being a hero, and now we’re going back to square one. We are also backtracking with Rumbelle. Belle had told Rumple off, and now she’s back in his arms believing that he is a good man while Rumple keeps the Dark One secret from her. Been there, done that, have way too many t-shirts.
For the next part of the season, we’ll be in the underworld. This has a whole slew of possibilities, and it will be fun to see some old villains again. A lot of people had called the twist that Emma would kill Killian and then go into the underworld to save him. Hopefully the second half of the season will be an adventure.
