If you missed ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” during Week 7 (Monday, May 2), you can always catch it On Demand. In the early days of television this was not an option, except for a possible summer re-run. Now the On Demand feature is available right at your fingertips from Bright House Networks. Just like the name states Icons Night was filled with classic iconic artists such as R&B’s Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, The Jackson 5, James Brown, and Beyonce. Rock icons included The Rolling Stones, U2, and the King himself, Elvis.
After the couples danced to their specifically chosen icon, it was on to the Team Dances featuring medleys from the Godfather of Soul and Queen Bey. The end of the show saw a double elimination that included a Super Bowl MVP and a “Real Housewives from Atlanta.” The night was filled with a lot of memorable performances that included Jodie and Keo opening the show with a quickstep to Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life.” Kim and Sasha went neon, complete with a black light, during their fun-loving samba to “ABC” from the Jackson 5.
Nyle and Peta danced a beautiful foxtrot to U2’s “Beautiful Day” and received a number of “10’s” from the judges, except there was another scoring glitch for the second straight week. They at least received one “10” from Carrie Ann. The Rolling Stones “Paint It Black” featured a darker tango from Antonio and Sharna. At one point the camera went off them for a brief moment. It turned out Sharna had a slight wardrobe malfunction. Wanya and Lindsay had one of the most creative dances with them dancing on opposite sides of a door in the beginning. Their foxtrot to Aretha Franklin’s “I Say a Little Prayer” had a 1950s vibe, likely honoring Wanya and Boyz II Men’s appearance in “Grease Live!,” where Wanya is picking up Lindsay for a date.
Whitney Houston was the icon of choice for Ginger and Val dancing a stunning Viennese waltz to “I Have Nothing.” They received the first of two perfect scores given during the two-hour live telecast. Von Miller didn’t have a clue who was Elvis Presley, granted he’s been dead for nearly 40 years (2017 will be exactly 40 years). Even if he never heard of the King of Rock n’ Roll, Von did channel Elvis with Witney as they danced a salsa to “A Little Less Conversation.” Closing out the night, and literally saving the best for last, was Paige and Mark’s jive to Tina Turner’s powerhouse hit “Proud Mary.” Its likely Paige may not have heard of Tina Turner, but she did her proud in every sense of the word. They received a well-deserved perfect score.
For the team dances it was the men vs. the ladies. The men absolutely slayed it with their tribute dance to James Brown. They covered various James Brown trademarks like Von wearing a cape and Wanya doing some of his famous moves. Team Beyonce definitely looked the part with the costumes and hair, though their dance was a pale comparison. Nyle ended up on top of the leaderboard with Wanya, Ginger, and Paige tied for second place. Wanya and Lindsay were in jeopardy, along with Von and Witney and Kim Fields and Sasha. Von and Kim were both eliminated during Week 7 on “Dancing with the Stars.”
