For its debut on the music festival scene, the independently produced Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival, March 4-6 at Sunshine Grove in Okeechobee, Florida, has quickly made a strong impression for its combination of artistic creativity and extraordinary atmosphere.
Not surprisingly, it’s sold out.
Credit for the fest’s inventiveness goes to its co-founder, Paul Peck, who curated Bonnnaroo’s SuperJam including Skrillex and Friends, Rock & Soul SuperJam with Jim James, Brittany Howard, John Oates, R. Kelly and Billy Idol and the hip-hop SuperJam with RZA, Solange, Schoolboy Q and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Okeechobee hosts two special jams.
The “PoWoW! A Live Superstar Mashup,” will be led by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Oates of Hall & Oates, with vocalist Miguel, Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler, Kamasi Washington, George Porter, Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Chris Karns, and Eric Krasno & Neal Evans.
“I am really honored and stoked to be the musical director for the first PoWow atOkeechobee,” said Oates. “The 2013 SuperJam at Bonnaroo was one of my favorite experiences as a musican and this PoWow is going to take it to another level. It’s going to be a onetime only crazy groove experience.”
Said Peck, “With PoWoW!, we’re cooking up an historic concert, the kind where you don’t know who is going to walk out on stage or what will happen next.
The idea is to create a show that we personally want to experience together with fans at Okeechobee.
Attendees will also get to experience a second PoWow with Sunday headlining Mumford & Sons. The multi-platinum artist will lead an all-star lineup featuring Tom Morello, The Avett Brothers and Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
The other fest’s headliners are Robert Plant and Bassnectar on Friday and Kendrick Lamar and Skrillex on Saturday.
A total of 80 bands spanning rock, hip-hop, EDM, and folk will be at the Okeechobee this weekend including Ween, Hall and Oates, the Avett Brothers, Big Boi’s Big Grams, Grace Potter, Odesza, Mac Miller, Kamasi Washington, Big Gigantic, Jason Isbell, Fetty Wap, Future, RL Grime, Portugal. The Man, White Denim, Booker T. Jones, Shpongle, Lettuce, Joey Bada$$, Four Tet, Dr. Dog, Deer Tick, the Soul Rebels, Nahko and Medicine For The People, Lettuce, White Denim, Booker T. Moving the fun away from the main staging area there will be dawn-to-dusk live music from an international roster of bands and DJs on the AquaChobee Beach Stage. It includes Twiddle, the Okeechobee Allstars featuring Oteil Burbridge, Roosevelt Collier and Jeremy Salken, Manic Focus, Life on Planets and Mixmaster Morris
Follow that up with dusk-to-dawn mix of techno and house at the Jungle 51 stage. Artists include Damian Lazarus, Marcel Fengler, Anton Zap, DJ Three, Andrew Grant and Rambo Springsteen.
Festivarians can also explore the ChobeeWobee Village to check out artisan craft vendors, art installations and intimate performances. Altogether, it incorporates art, yoga, holistic workshops, comedy and music.
