Robert Oden defeated John Thompson 258-185 in the championship game of the scratch singles competition in the 18th annual 700-Plus Singles/Virtual Doubles Tournament at Sarasota Lanes on Sunday (Feb. 21).
Scratch singles was open to all members of the Sarasota-Manatee County USBC Bowling Association who have ever rolled a certified three-game scratch series of 700 or better, and the top five qualifiers were seeded into a stepladder finals.
Thompson earned the top seed with a three-game qualifying pinfall of 751, while Oden was next in line with 736. Also qualifying for the No. 3 through No. 5 positions, were Dylan Clark (728), James DeWitt (708) and William “Bubba” Simmons (697).
Simmons opened the stepladder finals with consecutive victories over DeWitt (242-214) and Clark (236-200) before he was eliminated 184-168 by Oden, who advanced to face Thompson for the title. Even though he was defeated, Clark converted the ultra-difficult 7-10 split.
In handicap singles, open to SMCBA members who haven’t rolled a 700 series over the past four years, Clifford Drymon emerged victorious with a score of 812, while Boyd Stout was only three pins back at 809. Also cashing in the No. 3 position was Amada Mendez with 752.
Adding DeWitt’s 708 singles score and Drymon’s 812 handicap total gave that duo the championship in virtual doubles, featuring one SMCBA member who has rolled a 700 series and one member who hasn’t done so over the past four years. DeWitt’s scratch scores were 245, 225 and 238, while Drymon rolled 201, 224 and 217.
Oden and Phillip Williams were runner-up with 1,463, while also cashing were the teams of Steve Kosinski and Drymon (1,447) and Jordan Sepper and Mendez (1,413).
