Kitten Season is just around the corner and San Diego County Animal Services wants to help prevent unwanted kitten births that fill our local shelters with thousands of kittens every year.
“We are inundated with hundreds of unwanted kittens every year during kitten season,” said County Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson. “By offering the discount coupons during breeding season, we’re hoping to see a decrease in the numbers of unwanted pets we start getting in April and peaking in May.”
The County Animal Services is offering up to six spay/neuter discount coupons per family throughout the month of January to cat owners who reside in the Department’s service areas. This included three regional animal service facilities that cover the areas of San Diego, Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, Santee, Solana Beach and the unincorporated areas in the County of San Diego.
This year’s program offers coupons with a discount of $100.00 for spaying female cats and $75.00 for neutering male cats.
Where to get the coupons
Qualified residents can pick up the coupons between 9:30 am to 5:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday at any one of the three animal care facilities listed below:
San Diego Region
5480 Gaines Street
San Diego, CA 92110-2887
2481 Palomar Airport Road
Carlsbad, CA 92011-1531
5821 Sweetwater Road
Bonita, CA 91902-2219
You may also call Animals Services at 619-767-2632 for more information.
Cat owners have 60 days to use the coupons. Coupons are not transferrable to another person.
What veterinarian can I go to?
The Animal Services’ website lists 76 veterinarians throughout the county who will perform the surgery at a reduced cost. If the coupon is taken to one of the listed veterinarians, the cost of altering your cat will drop dramatically or in some cases go away entirely.
Spay/Neuter surgeries are performed by appointment only. When you call the vet of your choice, let them know that you have a coupon from the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services Spay/Neuter Program.
The maximum standard fee is $70.00 to spay a female cat and $55.00 to neuter a male cat. This fee includes the costs for postoperative care, including pain medicine, suture removal, other necessary medication, and hospitalization required as a result of the surgery (except for complications caused by a pre-existing medical condition or an owner’s negligence or lack of proper care and attention)—but in no case for longer than 14 days following the surgery.
Please note that if the cat is flea infested, flea treatment may be required up to an additional $12.00. Also, if the cat is pregnant in in her third trimester, there will be an additional charge of $15.00. If a male cat has an undescended testicle that requires more extensive surgery, there may be an additional charge of $40.00 or $80.00.
SNAP San Diego also offers assistance with spay/neuter services through their Neuter Scooter Vehicle and low-cost spay/neuter resources. Please note that the County Spay/Neuter Coupon Program is not available for feral cats but only for cats that have homes. SNAP does offer spay/neuter resources for unowned, free roaming cats and those living in cat communities.
For more information from SNAP, you can call (866)-772-9287.
Whichever program you take advantage of, we strongly encourage you to spay and neuter your cats and help stop the problem of cat overpopulation.
