If you are thinking about going to Rocklahoma this year, now is the time to start making your plans. Otherwise, if you wait until the last minute, you could find yourself left with no where to stay.
The annual three day music festival is held four miles north of Pryor, OK, at the 400 acre “Catch the Fever” event site. The dates are May 27 – 29, 2016. The line up this year is incredible and includes the Scorpions, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, Rob Zombie, Megadeth, Sixx A.M., Collective Soul, Bullet For My Valentine, Hell Yeah, Chevelle, Three Doors Down, Sebastian Bach, Sevendust, Pop Evil, Steel Panther, Great White, P.O.D., Bang Tango, Texas Hippie Coalition, Banshee plus many more bands.
If you have been to any of the previous Rocklahoma festivals, you know how difficult the lodging situation can be. For everyone else, to give you an idea of just how bad this problem can be, try to picture this: according to Wikipedia, the population of Pryor is 9,469. In 2014, record breakng Rocklahoma had over 60,000 fans in attendance. It is the largest Memorial Day celebration in the country.
When you look at the Rocklahoma website info page, under lodging there is a link which connects you to the Pryor Area Chamber of Commerce. On this page, there is a link to connect you to local lodging and accommodations. The city website lists five hotels and motels. All five of those are already completely sold out for the dates of Rocklahoma. This same website also lists two resorts that are somewhat in the area, but not actually in Pryor. The first, The Canebrake, closed it’s doors on Jan. 7, and is no longer open for business. The second, is the Southern Oaks Resort in Langley, OK. This resort is located at the southern end of Grand Lake on Highway 82, and is a peaceful and quiet getaway. The individual log cabin rental rates start out at $138 per night, at the Holiday Rate, since this will be Memorial Day weekend. According to the resort’s website, “they have Cub Cabins that are for two, Cottages and Honey Moon Cabin sleeps four comfortable, and the Resort Family Cabin and Deluxe Family Cabin sleeps six.” Two of the cabins have hot tubs, which would probably well appreciated after a day at the festival.
If you try to search for lodging elsewhere near the Catch the Fever festival site, you will find that the nearest towns which have hotels in this rural area are to the south, Wagoner, northwest of Pryor is Claremore, and finally, to the west is Tulsa, which has plenty of lodging available, but is approximately a 45 minute drive (if there are no traffic delays). So a quick trip back to the hotel could easily take a minimum of two hours.
You might want to check out the beautiful Tera Miranda Harbor & Resort at Monkey Island, nestled among the trees on the northern shores of Grand Lake, 48 miles from Pryor. This resort spot is surprisingly very affordable, considering that it looks like the perfect spot to go for a relaxing get away from it all vacation spot. What a perfect place to unwind and rejuvenate before hitting the madness of Rocklahoma again! There is a wide variety of cabins and lodges to choose from, each one unique. The most inexpensive option here is a one room lodge with two double beds that sleeps up to four people, priced at $130 per night. Additional guests can stay for $20 per person per night. Cabin #8 has three bedrooms, a full kitchen, and sleeps up to 8 for $350. The Lower Deer Lodge has two bedrooms, one bath, full kitchen and dining room, and a large patio for $235 per night. If you have a bigger party in mind, the Entire Deer Lodge (Upper and Lower) can be yours for $525 per night, and sleeps up to 14 people at the base rate. This comes out to less than $40 per person per night. This option includes four bedrooms plus a loft area with two beds, two kitchens, and a large outside deck area. Think of Tera Miranda as compared to the two star hotels in the area, even if you can find any available rooms, and this looks even more appealing. All have charcoal grills, cable and internet access. Cool off after a day at the festival by taking a dip in the lakefront beach or the pool. A full restaurant and a casino are also located nearby.
If you are looking for a place to stay that is much closer to the action, the Lake Hudson Inn in Adair is only 9.5 miles from Pryor, an approximate 11 minute drive. This is a much smaller establishment, but it does have a restaurant and pub, as well as a sandy beach and a picnic area for guests to enjoy. Lake Hudson is one of the top three bass fishing lakes in the state. The Inn was listed in OKC Pets Magazine as a pet friendly getaway. The Lake Hudson Inn is closed yearly for the biggest part of January for the owner to have some R & R time, but will re-open on Jan. 28. You can check them out on Facebook. And, Rocklahoma partiers are welcome here!
There are also quite a few privately owned cabins, lake houses, and homes that are available to rent which come fully furnished and equipped with everything that you might need. For example, there is a lake house for rent by owner on Lake Fort Gibson near Wagoner, available during Rocklahoma at the time of the publishing of this article. This is a two bedroom, two bath, home away from home which has a fully equipped kitchen and a full sized washer and dryer. There is also a fold out full size futon, making this perfect for up to six people for $450 for three nights. You can check out this lake house at VRBO Vacation Rental, property 719339. Or you could spend your weekend down time at a home in Bella Brisa on the waters edge, also at the southern part of Grand Lake on Langley Bluff, overlooking the main lake and historical Pensacola dam with a backdrop view of rolling hills. Enjoy the surrounding beauty while sitting on the deck or from the comfort of a glass enclosed sunroom. This is a two bedroom, two bath fully equipped home which also has a sofa bed, available for $200 per night for up to 6 people, with a 2 night minimum, located outside of Langley, approximately 23 miles from Pryor. If you are looking for something larger, check out property 651935, Knotty Pine Lodge, at the same VRBO website. This is a cabin for 10 at the south end of Grand Lake that rents for $400 per night. Still not large enough for your group? Property 741812, also on Grand Lake, has 6 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, and sleeps 17 for $550 per night. A few of these privately owned properties on this website, but not all, also charge, in addition to the nightly rates, a cleaning fee, and some require a small damage deposit. Just be sure to look at the “Detailed Price” on each listing.
If none of these options suit you, here is another totally different way to go – camping or RV rentals. A major perk of this option is that you are there, on site, for everything! There are after parties with bands playing throughout the campgrounds, so the fun doesn’t have to end when the concerts are over for the night. There are four campgrounds on the “Catch the Fever” grounds, with a 60 unit shower facility, fresh water, garbage service, restrooms and General Store. Campgrounds have 24-hour security and night lighting. General Admission 20′ x 40′ campsites are rented for $75 for the weekend, and the VIP campsites are $95. VIP campgrounds feature up close access to VIP concert entrance. The campgrounds open Sunday, May 22, at 12 p.m. and close on Tuesday, May 31, 12 p.m. Avoid the traffic and get there early! There are several businesses in the area which rent all sizes and shapes of RV’s. Some of them will even set up and deliver the RV to your campsite and set it up (for a small fee, of course). Route 66 RV’s in Claremore has a wide selection of rentals. According to their website, Tulsa RV has rentals starting at $89 per day. Cruise America RV Rental & Sales in Oklahoma City will rent a fairly new 5 person standard RV (Class C-25) for 5 nights for $775.00. The price for this traditional motorhome includes a power generator, which normally costs $50 per day.
