As of Saturday, a NoPhone Amazon listing indicates that the item is in high demand following the product presentation on the hit TV show “Shark Tank.” The product is based on the concept of people actually not using their mobile phones, an aspect that has been highly common in today’s society. Van Gould and Chris Sheldon are the creators of the product, which is said to cure phone addiction. Will this hot NoPhone product become a popular holiday gift idea for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and new graduates over the next several months?
According to ABC News in their April 7 report, the NoPhone is a thin piece of plastic meant to replace someone’s real mobile phone. The creators of the show describe their company as the “fake phone company” and are looking to prevent the widespread phenomenon of constantly checking one’s mobile phone for messages, Facebook updates, Instagram, Snapchat or other distractions. The founders met at the Virginia Commonwealth University and developed the side business while working at advertising firm Barton F. Graf, located in New York. Currently it sells for $10 to $12 on the Amazon website.
As of this report, Amazon had said there were just 13 NoPhone’s left in stock at a price of $12. Shipping was estimated at three to five days for the NoPhone which has a description boasting that it has “No data plan, no camera, no battery and no Wi-Fi.” All that said, it almost seems like the perfect gag gift for upcoming holidays such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or even to fool recent high school and college graduates with. Sheldon said of the device, “People spend too much time with their phones. The NoPhone can help you have no phone.”
Ironically, the NoPhone ranks at No. 210 in the “Cell Phone & Accessories Unlocked Cell Phones” category. However, phones including the Blu Advance 5.0, Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Apple iPhone 6 are continuing to lead the way in the top 10 of unlocked cell phones. Whether or not the NoPhone can ever make its way up to the top with those will show if there are enough individuals out there willing to try to cure their phone addiction, or have others in their life who want to help.
