May in Phoenix. A time to honor mom. A time when school is out for summer. A time when attending an outdoor concert doesn’t give you worry about heat exhaustion. If you want to take a break from graduation ceremonies or Mother’s Day celebrations, here are a few classic rock concerts worth checking out.
May 5, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. DREAM THEATER at the Ikeda Theatre at the Mesa Arts Center in Mesa. How appropriate that their latest album release is titled “The Astonishing.” Astonishing is the word you can use to describe the playing ability of any of their band members. Your jaw will drop more than once when watching these progressive metal virtuosos. Tickets are going fast and run from $41 to $89 plus fees.
May 7, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. DICK DALE at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix. A pioneer of surf rock and one of the most influential rock guitarists in the early 1960’s. When Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen cite you as an influence, well you must have done something right. Tickets are sold out, but maybe you know somebody
May 8, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. TODD RUNDGREN at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. Hello, it’s him. If the kids have been banging on the drum all day, see the light and take mom to see Todd on her day. This way you can still be friends. Tickets are priced from $39 to $79 plus fees
May 13, 2016 at 8 p.m. JASON BONHAM: LED ZEPPELIN EXPERIENCE at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. When you are the son of Led Zeppelin’s legendary drummer, John Bonham, you are much more than a tribute act. Quick, name your favorite Zeppelin song. Too many to choose from right? Chances are you’ll hear it though. Tickets are priced from $39 to $79 plus fees.
May 13, 2016 at 8 p.m. NIGHT RANGER at the Wild Horse Pass Casino Ovations LIVE! Showroom in Chandler. Don’t tell me you love me when you close your eyes. It might be a touch of madness to ask, as it’s somewhat personal, but is your sister Christian? If so, in a GOP world, you can still rock in America. Tickets are priced from $25 to $70 plus fees.
May 14, 2016 at 7 p.m. JOURNEY with THE DOOBIE BROTHERS and DAVE MASON, at Ak-Chin Pavilion in Phoenix. They’ll come to you with open arms. You’ll want to listen to the music. When the lights go down, you’ll find yourself rockin’ down the highway. Want good seats? Don’t stop believin’. Tickets run from $37 for lawn seating to $142. If you want VIP seating, there is that too. Fees will be added on as well.
May 14, 2016 at 8 p.m. STEEL PANTHER at Livewire in Scottsdale. Admittedly, they didn’t exist in the hair metal heydays of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. But nobody does the hair band shtick any better. Sexual double entendres in their lyrics? No, they are just flat out sexual. Be prepared to be insanely entertained. Tickets are $26.50 plus fees and the like.
May 22, 2016 at 7 p.m. BAD COMPANY and JOE WALSH at Ak-Chin Pavilion in Phoenix. Can’t get enough? Life has been good to you so far? Feel like makin’ love? Don’t walk away. Instead go running with the pack towards a Rocky Mountain way. These two vintage rock acts promise one hell of a night. Who’s to argue? Tickets range from $20 for lawn seating to $125 plus fees. VIP tickets will cost more but get you closer to the stage.
