The No. 9 Houston Cougars found the No. 18 Arkansas Razorback too much to handle as they dropped their second game in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic by the score of 12-3 at Minute Maid Park in Houston on Saturday, February 27, 2016. The loss was the second straight for the Cougars, who now post a 4-2 record in 2016.
Scoring started early in the game as the Razorbacks and the Cougars traded runs in the first inning to keep the game even. First baseman Joe Davis scored from first base on a double to deep left center field by third baseman Justin Montemayor to give the Cougars a short one-run lead. Arkansas responded in the bottom of the inning when leadoff batter Eric Cole scored from second base when first baseman Cullen Gassaway hit a sacrifice grounder to second base, allowing Cole to score.
Arkansas added to more runs in the second inning when Michael Bernal sent a monster hit to deep left field and into the Crawford Boxes for his second home run of the season for the short stop. The round tripper also scored left fielder Luke Bonfield from third base. The run eruption continued in the third inning for Arkansas were they turned five hits into five runs, including back-to-back home runs by Austin Catron and Michael Bernal. It was the first of the season for Catron and the third for Bernal. They added one run in the fifth inning and three more in the eighth to close out their scoring. Houston added runs in the sixth and seventh innings to round out their scoring.
Next up for the Cougars will be a 2:30 p.m. CST matchup against the No. 13 TCU Horned Frogs on Sunday, February 28.
