Idaho does not often get to play host to many of Europe’s best metal bands. America is a tough market for groups who command huge stages before thousands of loyal fans when performing across the pond. Many such artists choose to bypass smaller cities and venues like The Boise Knit, but Nightwish, one of Europe’s premier symphonic metal bands, are making the trek on Tuesday, March 8. They are also bringing along two more of the genre’s finest in Sonata Arctica and Delain. This is one show all heavy rock fans should be delighted to support, for it can pave the way for more of the best European bands to follow suit. Tickets for this amazing event are only $30. Nightwish fans can also get special VIP ticket packages.
Nightwish are currently touring in support of their mammoth 2015 release, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, an album which landed on many Best Of year-end lists. The record marked the first studio effort with new vocalist Floor Jansen (Revamp, After Forever) who recently received over 40,000 votes as the reader’s #1 pick for Metalholic Magazine’s Top 25 Women in Hard Rock and Metal for 2015. Jansen joins the core line up of founders Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards, songwriter) and Emppu Vuorinen (guitars), along with longtime bassist Marco Hietala. Wintersun drummer Kai Hahto is currently filling in behind the kit, and the band’s longtime friend and multi-instrumentalist, Troy Donockley has become a full-time member. Nightwish will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2016, and that celebration begins with this U.S. tour.
Finland’s Sonata Arctica is one of the most noted names in the power metal genre. The band is currently taking a short break from writing and recording the follow-up to its 2014 album, Pariah’s Child, which will be completed after the tour. This year signals the beginning of the band’s third decade. Drummer Tommy Portino and vocalist Tony Kakko formed the group in 1995, though it would be a few years before they would assume the Sonata Arctica moniker. The line-up is rounded out by keyboardist Henrik Klingenberg, bassist Pasi Kaupoinen, and guitarist Elias Viljanen. The band’s sophomore album, Silence, was released 15 years ago, so fans might expect something from that record on this tour.
Dutch symphonic metal sextet, Delain, will open the event. The band recently released its new EP, Lunar Prelude, which is a teaser for the band’s upcoming new studio album, due out later this year. Delain just launched a video and single for the new track, “Suckerpunch”, and Boise will be among the first to experience it live. The band was founded in 2002 by former Within Temptation keyboardist Martijn Westerholt. He brought it vocalist Charlotte Wessels to front the band. The band released its debut album, Lucidity, 10 years ago. Since then they have solidified the line-up with bassist Otto Schimmelpenninck van der Oije, guitarist Timo Somers, and new members Ruben Israel on drums and Merel Bechtold on guitar.
This will be a one of a kind musical event not to be missed for fans of melodic hard rock or metal. Tickets, including VIP packages, can still be purchased here.
