The NFL Wildcard round of the playoffs are over and it’s on to the Divisional round in 2016. Here is a list of the betting odds and lines plus all the over/unders for the four NFL Divisional round playoff games taking place this week on Saturday, January 16 and Sunday, January 17, 2016.
The Wildcard round of the NFL playoffs saw all four Wildcard teams win which meant all four road teams won last week. Three of those teams were favored to win so it was no great shock and even the Packers were favored to win in many places by game time. This week, all the home teams are favored to win so the odds makers were not impressed with anybody’s win last week.
- Kansas City Chiefs +5 at New England Patriots (O/U is 42)
The Chiefs went to Houston and shut out the Texans last week 30-0 taking advantage of five turnovers in the game. While the media seemed impressed by the Chiefs 11th win in a row obviously the odds makers were not as Kansas City is a 5 point underdog this week vs the Patriots.
Alex Smith is now 2-2 as a starting quarterback in NFL playoff games. Tom Brady for the Patriots is 21-8 lifetime as a starting QB in the NFL playoffs. The real question here is how healthy are the Patriots? If the Pats are healthy enough they should beat the Chiefs. If you’ve been winning with the Chiefs for the last 11 weeks in a row, though, you’ve got to bet them again this week as an underdog.
- Green Bay Packers +7 at Arizona Cardinals (O/U is 50)
The Packers pulled away and beat the Redskins last week without to much trouble by a score of 35-18 but the odds makers were not impressed and Green Bay is a 7 point underdog to beat the Cardinals on the road this week in Arizona. The Redskins did not beat one team with a winning record this season.
The win by Green Bay improved Aaron Rodgers lifetime playoff mark as a starting NFL QB to 7-5. Carson Palmer is 29-9 lifetime as the Cardinals starting QB in the regular season but he’s making his playoff debut for Arizona this week. Palmer went 0-2 in the playoffs with the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Cardinals did beat Green Bay 38-8 four weeks ago in Arizona. Can the Packers turn that around this week in the playoffs? To bet this game it really comes down to which QB do you prefer, Aaron Rodgers or Carson Palmer?
- Seattle Seahawks +3 at Carolina Panthers (O/U is 44)
The Seahawks lucked out last week when the Vikings kicker missed a chip-shot field goal at the end of the game allowing Seattle to come away with a 10-9 win in Minneapolis. Now Seattle is a 3 point underdog to win this week on the road vs Carolina. The Panthers went 15-1 this season including beating the Seahawks 27-23 in Seattle early in the season when the Seahawks were not playing great.
Russell Wilson is now 7-2 as a starting QB in the NFL playoffs. Cam Newton is 1-2 as a starter in the playoffs for Carolina. The fact that the Panthers are only favored by 3 points here despite winning 15 games and already beating Seattle this season tells you the odds makers certainly think the Seahawks can win this game.
- Pittsburgh Steelers +6.5 at Denver Broncos (O/U is N/A)
This game is impossible to bet until the status of Ben Roethlisberger can be determined. It looks like he will play but he probably has a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder. After beating the Bengals last week, Ben Roethlisberger is now 11-5 as a starting NFL QB in the playoffs.
Peyton Manning is starting for the Denver Broncos. Manning has a bad record of 11-13 as a starting QB in the NFL playoffs. The Steelers beat the the Broncos at home five weeks ago 34-27 with Brock Osweiler starting for Denver. If Roethlisberger was totally healthy the Steelers would be a good underdog bet here but who knows if he is? Antonio Brown is also likely out for the Steelers this week after that cheap vicious hit to the head he took last week vs the Bengals.
