It would have been George Harrison’s 73rd birthday this week. Feb. 25 is the date shown on his birth certificate and was thought to be his birthday until Harrison himself revealed he actually was born late in the day on the 24th. But many celebrations are planned around the country on both days as well as other days this week. Here are just some of them.
On Feb. 23, Brooklyn Raga Massive will hold a birthday tribute to George Harrison and the Beatles at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn. Also on Feb. 23, the Abilene Bar & Grill in Rochester, New York, will hold its fourth annual George Harrison Birthday Celebration (“With a Little Help From My Friends”). Performers will include Steve Lyons, Ray Paul, Dan Eilenberg, Steve Tortoretti and others and will be hosted by Don Christiano. The show will begin at 8 p.m. and admission is free. More information is on Facebook. On the 24th, KJ Farrell’s in Bellmore, New York, will hold a special George Harrison birthday show with Wonderous Stories and others at 7:30 p.m.
In Los Angeles, a special 73rd birthday celebration will take place starting at 6 p.m. on Feb. 25 at George Harrison’s official star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Star located in front of the Capitol Records Tower at 1750 Vine Street. The free event will feature comments from radio DJs Chris Carter of “Breakfast With the Beatles,” Les Perry of “Saturday With the Beatles” and Sirius X/M Radio’s Jim Ladd. A local vegan bakery will provide 73 birthday cupcakes which will shaped into a heart. Event organizers have a page on Facebook with more information.
Also on Feb. 25, Terrapin Crossroads in San Raphael, California, will feature “Ramble On Bangladesh: A Tribute To George Harrison,” with Lazyman, Stu Allen, Jason Crosby and Ezra Lipp at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 and those attending must be age 16 and over. And in Las Vegas, Nevada that same night, a Harrison tribute will take place at Abbey Road Crossing beginning at 7 p.m.
Feb. 26 will be the street date in the U.S. and the UK for the concert “George Fest: A Night To Celebrate the Music of George Harrison,” being released in packages of CD, DVD, vinyl and digital formats. Performers at the concert, which took place in Los Angeles in 2014, include Dhani Harrison, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Brian Wilson, Ben Harper and Norah Jones.
A listening party to celebrate the release of the album and DVD and also to celebrate Harrison’s birthday will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 26 at Waterloo Records in Austin, Texas. Special lithographs will be sold with the purchase of CD or DVD here and at also at many independent record stores. Waterloo Records says they will also give away a test pressing. “MTV Live” will premiere the “George Fest” film in the U.S. at 9 p.m. EST Feb. 27.
Also on Feb. 26, the Beatles tribute band Walrus Gumboot will headline a George Harrison birthday tribute at 9 p.m. at the British Beer Company in Sandwich Mass.
