Wineries usually like it when politicians and other leaders select their wines as part of a special dinner, festival, or marketing promotion such as the “New York State Farm Day” held each year in Washington, D.C. But, creating an overtly political wine is a rather unusual step.
Owner Phyllis Feder of Clinton Vineyards obviously isn’t making a secret of who she is supporting in the presidential race. She has just released a special wine called 2014 Victory White — a Seyval Blanc priced at $18 — specifically for toasting former Secretary of State and former New York Senator Hillary Clinton in her push to once again take up residence in the White House, this time as president rather than as first lady.
“As senator, Hillary Clinton proved herself to be a tireless and peerless friend to farmers, grape growers, and winemakers here in the Hudson Valley,” Feder said. “We return the favor by asking fellow Hudson Valley residents and businesses, wine lovers, and supporters nationwide to raise a glass in honor of Mrs. Clinton in her run for the Oval Office. We hope the toast will be made with our Victory White 2014, the perfect wine for celebrating all victories, large and small.”
Clinton hosted the “Farm Day” in the Senate Caucus Room as a senator beginning in 2002. The event highlighted New York foods and beverages for her colleagues and others whom New York producers wanted to educate on what is available. Clinton’s senate successor, Kirstin Gillibrand, continues to host the event. Clinton also was instrumental in securing federal disaster aid for grape growers after a severely cold winter in 2004, according to the New York Wine & Grape Foundation (NYWGF).
Clinton Vineyards, founded in 1976 by Feder’s late husband, Ben, is celebrating its 40th year in operation as a leader in the region’s agritourism industry. The NYWGF’s Unity Award is named for her in recognition of her efforts during a three-year term as chair of the foundation.
The winery is located at 450 Schultzville Road in the Dutchess County town of Clinton Corners. Phone: (845) 266-5372.
