I’m a gym rat, so obviously I love to workout. I’m also into beauty, hence my Examiner title. Put the two of them together and what do you get? A protein powder (of sorts) enhanced with collagen that boasts to do wonders for your skin as well as the recovery of your muscles following exercise.
Enter, NeoCell’s Collagen Sport Ultimate Recovery.
This powder contains an array of good for your skin and muscles ingredients such as; Vitamins: A, C, D3, E, B1, B2, B12 and Niacin. Also Pantothenic Acid, Calcium, Iron, Iodine, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Chromium and Molybdenum.
Let’s not forget 1000 mg of L-Glutamine and an Exogenous Amino Acid Blend.
Impressed? While I’m sure you’ve heard of other brands also containing collagen, NeoCell explains their collagen as being “Super Collagen” containing what they call 1 & 3 proteins. Confused? Here’s an explanation of 1 & 3 proteins and what they can do:
(Excerpt taken from NeoCell’s website)
Protein 1 & 3 : Provides specific amino acids necessary to replenishing the body’s collagen supply helps minimize fine lines & wrinkles, and improves elasticity in the skin builds and supports bone matrix, corrects weak, broken, split and damaged nail beds thickens fine hair, adds body and slows down hair loss repairs connective tissues for improved elasticity; improves circulation; promotes glycine builds lean muscle to help burn fat while you sleep.
The nutritional content is as follows; 123 Calories, 5 fat, 7mg Cholesterol, 244mg Sodium, 21mg Potassium, 2.25g Total Carbs, 2.25g Fiber, 0g Sugar, 30g Protein (15% Whey Isolate & 15% Super Collagen 1 &3)
If you’re a muscle head you probably already know about “net carbs” so essentially the amount of fiber in this powder cancels out the total carbs as they are both 2.25g respectively. So essentially, you’re getting 0 carbs.
Now that you know all the “deets” let’s see how this supplement actually performs.
I like to give any supplement at “least” 30 days, although depending on what supplement you’re testing you could see results sooner or much later. Here were my findings after 30 days, not successive however, as I only workout 3-5 times a week, so I didn’t ingest this daily.
Consistency: Fluffy and fine in texture.
Ease of mixing: Excellent! I was very impressed with how well this mixed, no lumps or clumps and I used it in my shaker cup too. Smooth feel in the mouth and no grit.
Taste: Delicious chocolate flavor! This, hands down, is THE BEST tasting protein powder I’ve ever used! I will add, however, that I did prefer mixing my scoopful with So Delicious Coconut Milk vs. just plain water. You can use almond milk as well or low fat milk. Plain water wasn’t as “creamy” and tasty. To keep that creamy texture I also preferred to use only 6 oz of coconut milk with my powder. They indicate on the label to use anywhere from 6-8 oz.
Regarding my performance using this supplement: I noticed quicker recovery (especially after leg days). I consumed mine following my workouts, however it suggests you also can have it within the first 45 minutes upon waking. I never took it that way as my need for this supplement was for immediate recovery following a workout. I wasn’t nearly as sore as I usually am when I DON”T take it. Definitely a plus!
Regarding the “beauty” aspect: I didn’t see any significance in the appearance of my skin tone or texture in just a short 30 day period, perhaps after using this supplement for a longer duration would yield results in that area. I can say however, even at 45 I still suffer from hormonal acne and have to be careful with whey in general as it tends to aggravate my acne. Fortunately this had no impact on making my acne flare or worsen what I already have going on. I did see a difference in my nail growth and my hair seemed to fall out less in the shower which is awesome because nobody likes hair “wookies” in the drain!
Digestion: Some of you may suffer or should I say make others suffer when you ingest a whey product because some tend to cause stomach upset nothing short of gas, cramping or bloating or all 3. Whey products are a hit or miss with me, some cause me discomfort while others do not. This particular supplement did not affect me negatively in that way at all. Definitely another plus!
NeoCell Collagen Sport is also gluten free, has no artificial flavors, no synthetic ingredients, lactose free. It is sweetened with Xylitol (prefer stevia it’s better for you).
Added tasty bonus! I use a scoop mixed with almond flour to make the most delicious protein pancakes! I’ve also used this to make protein waffles and muffins. The options are endless really when it comes to this supplement.
So let’s wrap up here with what NeoCell’s Collagen Sport Recovery (Chocolate) brings to the table:
Great tasting, great texture, mixes easily, does not cause tummy upset and it provides EXCELLENT recovery. I would definitely recommend this supplement and I would purchase this in the future.
The only downside I would say about this supplement is it’s whey protein is an “isolate” which is processed more than a protein “concentrate” degrading the health quality compounds you would find in a protein “concentrate”. However, protein isolate does contain more protein than a concentrate. Isolates are 90% protein and concentrates are 80%.
