National Christian Academy defeated Immaculate Conception, 58-46, at the Say Yes Tournament held at Truman High School in Bronx, NY.
National Christian Academy (NCA) started the game off strong by attacking the basket and artistically finishing. All of the NCA guards can go strong to the basket and use a variety of fakes to draw fouls and score. They led 14-4 with 3:11 left in the first quarter when Immaculate Conception (IC) called time-out. IC returned to the floor and played more aggressive defense. They only allowed two more points for the remainder of the first quarter. NCA led 16-12.
NCA’s Mykea Gray is great at attacking the basket. She is quick off the first step and is consistent from the foul line. She drew 7 shooting fouls and was 10 for 13 from the foul line. She finished with a total of 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists. In the second quarter Jasmine Gee popped out to the corner and scored a jump shot to tie the game, 23-23. Gee did an outstanding job keeping NCA off the boards. She worked hard to box out and drew three over-the-back calls on NCA. She finished with 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 4 points. Autumn Webster was on fire for the Blue Wolves. She made some tough shots that dropped straight through the rim. She had 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 9 points.
After two more possessions NCA took the lead again. NCA’s Shannon Dozier is a quick player who can hit from the outside, but can also drive to the basket. She had 6 rebounds, 8 steals, and 9 points. With 2:20 remaining Jordan McLemore tied the game up again for IC, 26-26. McLemore had a few great explosive drives to the basket. She also shot well from the perimeter. She had 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 11 points. The game was tied at the half, 28-28.
Elizabeth Martino came alive in the second half for NCA. With five seconds left in the third quarter, 33-33, Martino scored her first points of the game by doing a quick spin near the block to give NCA the lead, 35-33. Martino continued to score in the fourth quarter. She ended with 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 blocked shot, and 10 points.
NCA played great pressure and trapping defense in the fourth quarter. They earned multiple steals and pushed for fast break layups. They worked to extend their lead. Oliva Martino had 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 8 points. IC’s Breyenne Bellerand went hard to the basket and was 4 for 4 from the foul line. She had 5 rebounds, 1 blocked shot, 3 steals, and 12 points. IC’s Devin Dash is confident from the three-point line. She did a good job of picking off passes while the other team tried to break the press. She had 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 blocked shot, and 10 points.
