If you’re looking for a place to watch this year’s Daytona 500 in the company of like-minded NASCAR fans, Watkins Glen International (WGI) has an invitation for you — or, make that four invitations. According to a press release issued February 11, WGI announced that it is hosting Daytona 500 parties at four different locations in Western New York on the day of the race, Sunday, February 21.
“We think having multiple viewing parties spread out at their favorite establishments around the region is going to be a great opportunity for our fans,” said Watkins Glen International President, Michael Printup. Viewing parties begin at all locations at 12 noon, and admission at all locations is free.
The four locations are:
- Watkins Glen, N.Y.: Maria’s Tavern, 509 N. Franklin St.
- Elmira, N.Y.: Kahunas Bar, 416 Luce St.
- Corning, N.Y.: Oaks Sports Bar, 96 W. Market St.
- Niagara Fall, N.Y.: Seneca Niagara Casino, 310 4th St.
The parties will feature multiple television screens for watching the race, drawings for prizes, and opportunities to win a Watkins Glen International ticket package. In past years, the track has hosted a single party at the media center at the track, so this year marks a departure from the recent format, spreading the festivities across a broader portion of the Western New York region.
Daytona rolls out its “Daytona Rising” multi-million dollar set of improvements to its historic track in Florida when it hosts thousands of fans for the race next Sunday. While the sports car Rolex 24 at Daytona was held there recently, many more fans will pack the stands for NASCAR’s first points race of the season, which is also its signature race of the year. Many compare the Daytona 500 in NASCAR to the Super Bowl for the NFL, except that the racing series starts off its new season with its most famous race rather than end its championship there.
Thinking ahead to the day, Printup said, “With all of the history that comes with the Daytona 500, and the NASCAR debut of the Daytona Rising, it’s going to be a day to remember.” Fans are invited to watch the NASCAR Sprint Cup Daytona 500, also known as “The Great American Race” at any location of their choice.
Fans will be able to watch NASCAR action in Western New York in person over the weekend of August 4-7, 2016 when Watkins Glen International hosts the series for the Cheez-It 355 at The Glen. For more information or tickets, see the WGI website.
