Mystery Ranch, a backpack company nestled in Bozeman, Montana and surrounded by the Bridger Mountains, Madison Range, Absaroka Beartooth Mountain Range, Hyalite Mountains and Spanish Peaks, is a company that is no stranger in how to make a durable and quality backpack. In a massively saturated market with so much competition when it comes to backpacks, Mystery Ranch packs carry an unprecedented quality backed by 40 years of pack-building prowess.
Mystery Ranch has a very dedicated team with leaders Dana Gleason and Renee Sippel-Baker at the helm. Dana and Renee were also the ones that established Dana Design back in 1985 which quickly became the pack to trust for uncompromising durability and a comfortable carry among mountaineers and backpackers. Each Mystery Ranch pack has a strong dose of Bozeman, Montana. All employees are mountain people, and the atmosphere in the facility is one of hard work and dedication. Add some spice, a one-minute ‘get-up-and-move’ every hour with some music playing overhead, and a zest of love for the outdoors, and you’ve got the team at Mystery Ranch. Every new employee at the Ranch learns to sew as part of their training to ensure the understanding that quality of workmanship is the foundation of the packs and the brand moving forward.
Whether you’re in the military on a Special Ops assignment, a young Hot Shot (Southern California Los Padres crew) fire fighter, or exploring on mountainous regions absorbing mysterious beauty in the outdoors, Mystery Ranch has a pack that is up to the task and will see you through your venture. These packs are built the right way from start to finish. Walking through the headquarters and seeing just a glimpse of the work and process of making a pack made you realize the expertise and focus that all of the Mystery Ranch team has. It also built an even greater appreciation for the quality of the pack and respect for those that help make such an amazing product.
In spring of 2016, an entirely new Mountain collection of packs will launch. During the Bozeman Ice Festival that took place December 9-13, 2015, the Mystery Ranch Pitch Series pack made its debut. The Pitch Series is from the Mystery Ranch Alpine collection and features four styles and sizes (Pitch 55, Pitch 40, Pitch 20 and Pitch 17) designed to accommodate any climbing adventure.
I took the Pitch 40 out to demo during the festival along the ice climbing routes in Hyalite Canyon, and this pack easily held all my gear and necessities without any problem. After making the simple adjustments to my torso, the Pitch 40 made for a really nice fit that felt sturdy and comfortable. I really liked the roll top feature and the adjustable straps to tighten or loosen depending on the load of the pack. The pack held its own in the snow, mud and ice and kept all my gear protected and dry.
“You have to build a pack the way people will use it,” stated Dana Gleason. This means it has to be simple for the user to adjust and wear. With a Mystery Ranch pack, you’ll find a pack that is built for your mission. These may not be the lightest weight backpacks on the market today, but they’re not on the heavyweight side either. They somewhat fall in between as far as weight, and you can be rest assured that the pack will be comfortable and carry the load necessary to get the job done. And if you ever find yourself in Bozeman, make sure you stop by their shop. The staff will take great care of you.
