Yesterday’s episode of Food Network “Mystery Diners” was titled, “Tables Turned.” Charles Stiles came to Maywood, California to meet with owner Xavier Franco who runs several restaurants. This particular one is called El Toro De Oro. Charles was summoned by Bryan and Jessica, servers at the Maywood restaurant. When the ownership changed, they hired a new general manager named Ryan, but they have never met the new owner who lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. The servers both believe that if he knew what was going on with the new manager, who screams at the staff and is nice one minute and a beast the next; he would take matters into his own hands. Most of the people, who work there, have been there over ten years, and Xavier offered then health insurance, which they never had before and cannot afford to lose their jobs.
Xavier saw a short video on Bryan’s phone, which showed Ryan screaming and cursing at the kitchen staff and was not convinced, because he knows how hard it is to run a restaurant. Jessica then told him that Ryan puts his hands on the women too while they were on duty. Xavier told “Mystery Diners” that they have been best friends for years and they were college roommates, so they go back pretty far.
Charles had his assistant disguise Xavier so that he and Charles could pose as restaurant customers. This was the first time they ever had a control room inside the restaurant. Cameramen were also disguised as restaurant customers. Bryan told Ryan that he was switching shifts with another server and he gave him a hard time, because it obviously was done before. He told him to go serve some **** nachos, because he had lots of work to do.
Charles then had another on his staff make a mess on the patio to see how Ryan would react. When Amanda broke a plate, the busboy brought out a mop and did a horrible job cleaning it up. Xavier told Charles that the shift manager must train the people to do their job. Stew was the shift manager in this case, but Charles stated that it was Ryan’s job to be sure the staff was doing their job.
When a knock came to Ryan’s door, it was a staff member with his dry cleaning. He pointed out a stain that was not removed and yelled at the person. They spotted a very pretty woman who came into the restaurant, clocked in and then went to sit on the patio. She was not dressed as a member of the staff and Xavier saw that he was obviously paying her. Then Ryan was spotted bringing her food. He then went around passing out paychecks and told Jessica that his girl is out of town next week if she wanted to swing by. She told him that he was disgusting and he told her that if she did not like it, she was free to quit, as he touched her hair. She told him it was sexual harassment. He then went to the patio and gave the young woman her paycheck; for doing what?
While the restaurant was filled with people, Ryan came to Bryan and told him that the request he granted was rescinded and Bryan could not switch shifts with Carlos. So they tested the shift manager’s ability to manage as Bryan went to him with his problem. So Stew went to Ryan about the incident and asked if his girlfriend could cover the shift; making her work for her pay. They stepped outside and had a loud battle. Amanda came to summon Ryan to the parking lot for an emergency. When he arrived, Charles asked if Xavier looked familiar to him as he pulled off his beard and glasses. Ryan asked what the *** he was doing there?
When confronted, Ryan tried to make excuses, but Xavier fired him and told him that he never grew up. Since being fired, Ryan has not been able to make up with Xavier. The girlfriend’s paycheck has been cancelled before she was ever able to cash it. Stew has been promoted to general manager and Bryan and Jessica have reported that workplace harmony has been returned and the employees have never been happier at El Toro De Oro, thanks to Charles and his staff of “Mystery Diners.”
