The MMORPG genre consists of widely varied types of games, from the standard fantasy setting of “World of Warcraft” to the science fiction world(s) of “Star Trek Online.” Despite all the differences, however, there are many similarities, from the types of character classes to the business models these games employ to make money. Another similarity is the types of quests (or missions) that MMORPGs have for their players to work through. Let’s take a look at some of the more common quest types from MMORPGs.
Kill Quests take various forms, but the objective for these is to kill (or “defeat” or “subdue”) one or more other characters or monsters (“mobs”) in the game. Kill Quests can take the form of “Kill X of Y,” where one must defeat a certain number (“X”) of a certain enemy group (“Y”). Another type of Kill Quest is “Kill [Named],” where one must seek out a mob with a certain name.
Escort Quests are just what they sound like. The player character must escort a non-player character (NPC), controlled by the game engine, out of the area where they are found to another point on the game map. Many players find Escort Quests frustrating, especially when the character they’re escorting gets stuck behind an object or antagonizes (“aggros”) enemy mobs.
Defend Quests are quests wherein the player character must defend an NPC, item, or place, against enemies. Often, these enemies arrive in waves of progressing difficulty. Defend Quests end either after a set amount of time, or after a certain number of waves of enemies have been defeated.
Delivery Quests are missions in which a quest giver asks the player character to take an object or message to another location or NPC. These quests are often referred to by players as “Fedex Missions.”
Collection Quests are given to players when the quest giver wants a certain number of specific items for various purposes. These quests are often related to crafting, and will lead to the player (or sometimes the quest giver) producing some object made from the collected items.
These are just a few of the most common quest or mission types among MMORPGs. Leave a comment below to add other types of quests you’ve seen, or to talk about your favorite types of quests.
