My dog, Bolt, is an energetic terrier, so I walk him on a retractable leash. That way, when we’re in an open area, I can give him some room to run. Unfortunately, some retractable leashes aren’t very durable, and I often worry that he could pull the leash out of my hand. I also hate thin retractable leashes that burn my hand if I have to suddenly grab and hold the leash when something unexpected pops up.
Those problems, and several others, are addressed with the MIU Pet Safety Retractable Dog Leash, which I was recently given an opportunity to review. Having just gotten a nasty hand burn with my old, thin retractable when Bolt recently spotted an alligator and thought it might want to play, I was ready to try something new. I tend to grab the leash rather than use the button in cases where I want to be absolutely sure I get him under control fast.
When the MIU leash arrived, I was pleased to see that it was a nice thickness and was made from somewhat softer material, making it a little more forgiving if you need to grab it. It was a little confusing for me at first to learn how to use the adjustment buttons, but I caught on soon enough. It’s also a bit noisy when spooling, but that doesn’t affect its operation.
I loved the fact that the MIU leash is made of bright yellow reflective material. I walk Bolt at night every evening, and I live near a construction area with no sidewalks. It’s a popular dog walking spot, but lighting is very poor and it gets some car traffic. I love having the headlights reflect on the MIU and see that I’m there. The leash also comes with a poop bag holder so I always have a ready supply on hand when I bring it with me. That’s especially helpful when he decided to do a surprise second poop; quite embarrassing when you only brought a single bag.
But perhaps my favorite feature of the MIU leash is the strap with which you can secure it to your hand. That way, if your dog pulls the leash out of your hand, you’re still holding the strap. We recently had a neighbor whose dog pulled his leash out of the pet sitter’s hand, and he was missing for two weeks. Thankfully, he eventually made his way home, but the extra strap would have prevented all that stress and the potential tragedy.
One feature I’m sure that Bolt likes is the bungee you can hook between the leash and collar. He normally walks like a good boy, but being a Jack Russell and rat terrier mix, even now and then he likes to take off toward a squirrel or other irresistible object. The bungee acts as a buffer so he doesn’t get such a severe jolt.
All in all, I love the MIU retractable dog leash, especially for its safety features. Between being more visible at night and having the double security of the hand strap, it definitely helps me feel more secure at dog walking time.
