Tom Cruise had a run for his money when Rebecca Ferguson was cast to be his leading lady in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. While Cruise is fearless when it comes to attempting new stunts – for example, in Rogue Nation, the action star hung off a side of a moving airplane – FOR REAL and held his breath for 6 minutes for a complicated underwater stunt. Still, the lovely and talented Rebecca Ferguson gave it her all when it came to matching him on the stunt meter.
If you missed Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation in theaters, then you’re in luck. The action-packed film is available on DVD and Blu-Ray this week and along with the film, it’s jam-packed with special features.
Ferguson plays the mysterious operative Isla Faust in the newest installment of the movie franchise and told me that going up against Tom Cruise was a little nerve wracking but seeing him in action just gave her more incentive to do her best.
Ferguson, who is 31, grew up in Stockholm, Sweden and has been in a number of high-profile productions, like The Red Tent, The White Queen and Hercules opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
When Ferguson first got the call informing her that Cruise and the movie’s director Christopher McQuarrie wanted to meet with her to discuss the role, she was on the back of a camel in the Moroccan desert filming The Red Tent. The very next day, she was walking into a meeting with the two men. The conversation with Cruise ended up being so comfortable and casual that her nerves immediately went away. “He’s just a man who loves doing what he does,” she told me.
Before filming began, Ferguson was taken to a special boot camp facility where she underwent a month of intense training to prepare her body for the high-action fight sequences. But perhaps her biggest accomplishment was overcoming her fear of heights. “I had vertigo and I did a 120-foot free fall,” she said. “ I still can’t believe I did it. I’m pretty proud of myself.” Then, after watching Cruise tackle many of his own stunts she felt confident enough to attempt her own daring moves without a stunt double.
Rebecca Ferguson has many projects lined up, including a role in the highly anticipated film, The Girl on The Train based on the best-selling novel. She’s also starring alongside Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, who she calls “absolutely brilliant,” in her next film, Florence Foster Jenkins.
In the above interview, the lovely and talented Rebecca Ferguson discussed working on Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and how much she learned from her co-star Tom Cruise.
