The Miss Universe mistake that forced host Steve Harvey to take the Miss Universe 2015 crown away from Miss Colombia and give it to the actual winner, Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, has caused uproar on social media and several apologies by Harvey.
“I’d like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible,” writes Steve Harvey on his Twitter page on Sunday night. “Secondly, I’d like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. Again it was an honest mistake.”
The shock and disbelief that erupted online after the wrong Miss Universe 2015 was crowned has gone viral and watching the video of the crowning of Miss Colombia – two minutes of tears and celebration – and then having Steve Harvey come back and say “I have to apologize, the first runner up is Colombia,” is shocking.
Watching Miss Colombia experience the Miss Universe 2015 mistake during the finals in Las Vegas on Sunday night is heartbreaking as she moves from tears of joy to a mixture of tears and laughter as to “what is going on?”
“I have been watching TV for 56 yrs and never experienced anything what just saw w/ Miss Universe #Embarrassing Feel bad for Miss Columbia,” reads one comment on Twitter.
“Let us all congratulate Miss Columbia for being Miss Universe for at least 35 seconds,” reads another comment.
In regard to Sunday night’s Miss Universe mistake, the Miss Universe Organization released a statement via FOX representative Joanna Wolff:
“The excitement of live TV was evident tonight on the MISS UNIVERSE® stage with over 10 million live fan votes tabulated. Unfortunately, a live telecast means that human error can come into play. We witnessed that tonight when the wrong winner was initially announced. Our sincerest apologies to Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez, Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, their families and fans. We congratulate Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach as Miss Universe 2015.”
Miss Colombia showed an immense amount of “grace under pressure” when last year’s Miss Universe had to take the crown from Miss Colombia’s head and put it on Miss Philippines, and on her Twitter page, the two-minute Miss Universe 2015 is receiving a lot of support:
I’d hate to be in that position – cry of happiness then cry of sadness after seconds lol dang #MissUniverse2015 #AriadnaGutierrez be happy.”
“That was heartbreaking to watch! Aun sin corona eres ganadora! Still a winner! #AriadnaGutiérrez #MissUniverse2015 #MissColombia.”
“A Huge humilliation At least Miss #AriadnaGutierrez showed she is a really strong woman.”
“The hearts of all Colombians are with you #AriadnaGutierrez you are still miss universe in our hearts.”
As seen in the above video, Miss Colombia is taking the Miss Universe 2015 gaffe and Steve Harvey’s mistake with grace: “Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy.”
