Damon “The Bull” Minor (8-1) defeated Andres Encinales (3-2) by unanimous decision (two 30-27s & one 29-28) in a tournament final to become the new Spartyka Fight League lightweight champion Friday night at SFL XXII. This card took place at the Ted Constant Convention Center in Norfolk.
This was a battle between two of Virginia’s top amateurs. Early in the first round, Minor’s strikes couldn’t make a big mark on Encinales, so he tried his ground skills and took down Encinales. The best strike by Minor came late in that round with a left high kick, but Encinales caught it and turned it into a takedown for him. That was a close first round between the combatants.
In the later rounds, Minor turned it on. During Round 2, after eluding the low kicks of Encinales, Minor slammed his opponent down to the mat. That bodyslam did not keep Encinales down for long.
When the last round came, Minor created new striking combos to counter the strikes of Encinales. One more bodyslam later, the championship was in the possession of “The Bull”. MMA in VA scored all three rounds 10-19 in Minor’s favor.
