Jan. 22 marked National Polka Dot Day and what better way to celebrate it than with the global icon who has been inspiring others with her dotted designs for decades – The one and only, Minnie Mouse.
In collaboration with Disney and Refinery29, Minnie Mouse “Rocks the Dots” is a sublime way to honor such a beloved figure whose style has influenced generations. The special one day event, which opens to the public today, Jan. 23 from 12-8pm at The Paper Agency, here in Los Angeles, allows fans the opportunity to journey through the history of Minnie’s influence on fashion and pop culture with a retrospective interactive fashion and art installation. Those who attend will not only get a sneak peek at some upcoming Minnie-inspired collaborations but will also get the opportunity to purchase brand new, limited edition items which are only available on site.
To fully pay tribute to the icon with the signature style, and get her party-ready, incredibly talented designer and CFDA member, Christian Siriano, revealed in an exclusive preview, a custom dress that he made for Minnie so that she could “Rock the Dots” on her special day.
The innovative bespoke red carpet creation Siriano designed, incorporates large bows, Swarovski Crystals and brilliantly adds a new twist to the trademark style we all love, with a flash of fuchsia. It embodies everything that is happy, fun, playful and good about Minnie.
The celebration was off to an early start yesterday morning, with a private tour for Beyonce’ and Jay Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy. From there the star-studded festivities continued with such talent as the lovely, Sarah Hyland from ABC’s “Modern Family”. She rocked the launch in an adorable matching Soleil Dot Blouse and short set by Line & Dot.
All-around the fashion was grand and the mood was majestic. It was the perfect way to kick off the the year long celebration that honors Minnie and her new collaborations with brands such as Lauren Conrad, UGG, Kate Spade and Sephora.
Becky Cline, who is the director of The Walt Disney Archives, said that the stylish, feminine and optimistic looks of Minnie are always evolving. From glasses to hats to bows, she’s on the leading edge of future style and she rocks whatever she wears. This is her year to shine.
Christian, who is preparing for the upcoming SAG Awards, NYFW, and is also launching his new Lane Bryant collection in May, says that the great thing about Minnie is that everyone loves her. She’s adored whether you’re five or you’re eighty. Everyone has at least one piece in their closet that was inspired by Minnie. A bit of fashion advice from the groundbreaking designer himself – Whatever your style is, when it comes to fashion – never second guess yourself. Always take risks.
