Although the Goodwin Festival of Speed is still 2-months away, 1995 NASCAR Camping World Truck Champ Mike Skinner is already preparing for his 6th annual trip across the Altantic with team owner and driver Andrew Franzone, and celebrity guest driver Bill Goldberg. The team will have three trucks at the iconic festival, with each driver making two runs up the 1.16-mile hill climb daily. This year he will pilot the truck nicknamed the “Skinner Special,.” in an attempt to achieve his 3rd straight NASCAR class victory while also looking to break his own record time, set in 2015. The truck was originally a part of the Bill Davis Racing stable, has been set up specifically for road course competition.
“I can’t wait for this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed,” Skinner stated.. “We have such great support from our partners like Textron Aviation, Cessna and Toyota, and to be able to take three trucks to this year’s event is very exciting. I’m looking forward to having our good friend Bill Goldberg there as a celebrity guest driver. Likewise, Andrew Franzone has been such a great friend over the years; to have him as our team owner and work with him as he advances his driving, I really enjoy watching him
Franzone will be behind the wheel of “Truck 10, so named because it is the 10th Toyota Tundra racing chassis ever built. Truck 10 was a favorite of Skinner’s during his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series career. While Franzone continues his driver development under the direction of Skinner, he is no stranger to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The 2016 festival will mark Franzone’s 4th year participating in the annual hill climb event. Meanwhile, 2-time WWE World Heavyweight Championship, actor and automobile aficionado Bill Goldberg will drive the team’s “Celebrity” truck.
Goldberg, also a WCW World Tag Team Championship, as well as a collector of vintage cars. first met Skinner 10 years ago when Skinner drove a racecar promoting a television show hosted by Goldberg in 2005. After undergoing some training with Skinner and Racecar Solutions, Goldberg will make his first appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Hosted by Lord March at the Goodwood Estate in West Sussex, England, the Goodwood Festival of Speed features every kind of car imaginable from the 1800s through today while also attracting some of the most accomplished drivers in motorsports. This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed will take place June 23-26, 2016.
It should also be noted, that in addition to racing for a record, the team will plans to use the Goodwood Festival of Speed to raise awareness and funds for Hope For The Warriors’ Drive For Hope program, a military nonprofit that supports post-9/11 service members, veterans and military families. The team will carry the organization’s decals on their race trucks and firesuits.
