Mike Clark defeated Harry Wright by a score of 225-195 in the championship game of the third in a 11-week string of Champions Series scratch sweepers at AMF Gulf Gate Lanes on Tuesday (Feb. 16).
Clark held the upper hand throughout the title showdown after opening with five consecutive strikes in a tournament that yielded far-higher scores than the first two events in the series.
With scores of 212, 226 and 245, Jesse Hawver topped the three-game qualifying session with a 683 series, while Wright was second with 659 on scores of 246, 223 and 190. Clark also qualified for match play with a 652 pinfall on games of 189, 237 and 226. And although they didn’t advance, Saul Insignares (623) and Steve Baran (603) also finished on the plus-side of 200.
After the cut to the final three, Clark fired a 232 with the help of a five-bagger starting in the third frame, and Wright also made it the the finale with a 184, while Hawver was eliminated after shooting 175.
The Champions Series is being conducted on the same format as the recent King Of Gulf Gate series, which concluded its 11-week run last month, and the fourth Champions Series event will be held on Tuesday (Feb. 23). Entry fee into each weekly event is $20, and sign-up and registration begin at 6:15 p.m., with practice starting at 6:50 p.m. First place will pay a guaranteed $75, based on only 10 entries.
The format calls for three qualifying games on a modified house pattern, after which there will be a 1-in-5 cut, and the survivors will roll one game for the title (or force a cut to the top two for a final title-game showdown). A 40-foot Abbey Road lane-conditioning pattern will be utilized for the next event.
The series will continue to build toward a Week 11 finale, but in order to qualify for the final week, a bowler must enter at least six of the weekly events. There will be $2 set aside each week to be earmarked for the Week 11 prize fund. Brackets will be available, and for additional information, you may call Gary Gooch at 921-4447.
