Melodie Gliniewicz, the widow of former Chicago cop Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz, is facing multiple charges for her role in an ill-conceived, extravagant cover-up that she and her late husband allegedly perpetrated.
The disgraced Joseph Gliniewicz, a 30-year veteran cop and father to four, shot himself in the chest last September and attempted to make it appear like a murder. The incident prompted a massive manhunt and investigation into ficticious suspects.
The former cop is also accused of coercing his son, DJ Gliniewicz, to marry a woman Joseph had an affair with so that DJ could pilfer a few extra grand per month from the military.
Joseph – and now his 52-year-old widow Melodie Gliniewicz – were both suspected of siphoning off tens of thousands of dollars from the Fox Lake Police Explorers youth program, headed up by Joseph since 1987. Joseph Gliniewicz – known as “GI Joe” and an ex-Army “supercop” by those in his community – had a dark, double life that included cocaine use, heavy drinking, workplace sexual assault, fraud and embezzlement.
Writes CNN on March 10: “A grand jury indicted Melodie Gliniewicz in January on six counts accusing her of participating in her husband’s stealing of charitable funds. On Wednesday, grand jurors indicted her on new charges of using charitable funds for personal benefit, and three counts of conspiracy related to use of the funds and money laundering.”
It’s estimated that the Gliniewiczs stole anywhere between $10K and $100K between 2008 and 2014 – and used the pilfered money to fund expensive trips to Hawaii, extravagant dinners – and adult websites. Melodie’s attorneys claim she was not an accomplice to her late husband, but a “victim of her husband’s secret actions.”
According to reports, Joseph Gliniewicz compelled his Army son to marry Kathryn Grams, a woman that Gliniewicz slept with during his 26-year marriage to Melodie. The ploy was designed to boost his son’s benefits from the government, since military men are paid more for family members they are supporting.
However, the marriage dissolved shortly after they were wed; court documents show the pair were married in July 2013, moved into separate homes one month later, and ultimately dissolved the sham marriage in late 2014, according to local news station WGN-TV.
As previously reported by Examiner:
The elaborate scheming reportedly even included a “hit” Gliniewicz had put on Fax Lake’s village administrator Anne Marrin because she had uncovered the truth about his sucking funds from the department’s outreach programs. Lake County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Christopher Covelli said that they found cocaine in Gliniewicz’s desk that they suspect he was attempting to plant on Marrin. Text messages also showed that Gliniewicz, a 30-year cop and father of four, was in contact with a “high ranking” gang member regarding the hit and the drugs.
The Chicago Tribune reports that Melodie, if found guilty, faces sentencing from probation up to seven years in prison. Police have seized her bank accounts and credit cards. Melodie Gliniewicz remains out of jail on a $5,000 bond.
