The 58th Annual Grammy Awards took place on Feb. 15, 2016, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Here is what this Grammy winner said backstage in the press room.
Best New Artist
You were very emotional in your acceptance speech. What was going through your mind?
I remember pointing to [Epic Records chairman/CEO] L.A. Reid, and I remember crying, and thinking, “Don’t snort on TV right now. Get it together. Remember your mom and dad and charm.” I forgot a lot of people, but I got the big ones down.
What advice do you have for aspiring songwriters?
Just keep doing it. Every day, write a song. And when you have 200, write 500. And when you have 500, write 1,000. And don’t stop writing until you get where you want to be. I wrote a song two days ago. Just keep going.
You have a lot of success now, but can you talk about your struggle to get to where you are?
I struggled a lot with my self, with my confidence. If you have the confidence, you will succeed much faster than you want to. As soon as I started being confident with “All About That Bass,” and seeing the song blow up, I knew what I wanted, in that I could keep going and that I could achieve my goals. Confidence is what I struggled with.
Can you talk about what your second album will sound like?
My second album is very different from my first album. It’s hard, it’s dope, and it’s intense. And it’s got a little Missy [Elliott] vibe, which you wouldn’t expect from a Meghan Trainor girl. So I wanted to show them that I’m changing, my music is changing, and to prove to them I could do it, I got sassy hair.
What was your family’s reaction to you winning?
My brothers, they all ran to me in the big hallways of the Staples Center. I saw them, and I was bawling and yelling. I think I lost my voice because I was yelling and crying. They caught me and my parents.
My dad made a toast — we had champagne back there — and he said, “From now on, you’ll be introduced as ‘Grammy winner’ instead of ‘Grammy-nominated.’” That was so cool. And my mom just keeps going, “What?” Awesome!
Of your fellow nominees for Best New Artist, who are your favorites?
I love Tori [Kelly] and James Bay. I think [their Grammy Awards performance] was an iconic moment that we will replay for the rest of our lives. I told them when they came off stage, and I said, “You have no idea what you just did.”
For the rest of the Grammys, they will bring back than clip and say, “Remember when …” They’re like, “No, no.” I was like, “That was iconic.” They murdered it. They killed it. It was amazing.
