Because St. Andrew’s Episcopal Academy is a nationally accredited college preparatory Pre-K through 12 school located in historic downtown Ft. Pierce with a rich tradition of academic success, it is in keeping with their legacy since 1970 to provide the very best for their students that St. Andrew’s Episcopal Academy is proud to announce its hiring of their new marine science teacher, Meghan Buckley.
Buckley is enthusiastic about bringing an inquiry-based approach to teaching science with a strong emphasis in creating interdisciplinary lessons to highlight the connections between life, earth and physical sciences and technology, math, language arts and social studies. She will also bring her experience in coaching an Ocean Science Bowl team and is looking forward to getting a winning team started at St. Andrew’s. Her goal in sharing her scientific knowledge is to be able to inspire the students to be good environmental stewards and reach their fullest potential.
Meghan Buckley’s credentials include her earning her bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Barry University in 2006 and her master’s degree in marine biology from Florida Institute of Technology in 2012. Her thesis project involved examining the larvae (or babies) of a filter-feeding species of crab that lives in the Indian River Lagoon, the Green Porcelain Crab Petrolisthes aramtus.
While completing her graduate degree at Florida Tech, Ms. Buckley was awarded a NSF Graduate Teaching Fellowship, which provided her the opportunity to share her research and passion for marine science with students and teachers in elementary, middle and high schools. Through this opportunity she developed a love for teaching and interest in making science more relevant and engaging for students of all ages.
Ms. Buckley previously worked as the program coordinator on the COSEE Florida grant at Indian River State College. The grant program, funded by the National Science Foundation, involved training ocean scientists in sharing their research with the community and training teachers to bring marine science research into the classroom. Buckley will be teaching the 6th and 7th grade students and will be the instructor for the marine science ecology lecture and lab dual enrollment course.
St. Andrew’s Episcopal Academy welcomes new marine science teacher, Meghan Buckley and looks forward to the new challenges and opportunities that she will provide students as a member of St. Andrew’s faculty.
