According to boxing legend Muhammad Ali, “Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision.” Young music mavericks T and J AKA Timbo and Jake Furia possess the heart of a champion. T and J are taking the independent music world by storm with their current single entitled “Champion.”
Jesse Atkinson: Give us some background info as to who you are.
Timbo – My name is Tim Dunbar I am a Hip hop artist and songwriter. I enjoy expressing myself and creating music that can help move people in a positive direction.
Jake Furia – Well my name is Jake Furia. I’m from Long Island, NY, I’m a local artist/supporter of the scene here and I play with four groups.
JA: What is the significance of your stage name?
Tim: Timbo is my stage name. My friends have called me Timbo forever.
JF: I usually just keep it to Jake from whatever group i’m representing haha, or from State Farm, everybody loves that joke
JA: Who is your target market?
Tim: It is mainstream FM listeners mixed with the accompanying underground genres/demographics that help to make our music.
JF: It depends on what group I’m with but with T&J my target audience is mainstream FM listeners mixed with the accompanying underground genres/demographics that help to make our music
JA: What is your USP? (Unique Selling Proposition) and what sets you apart from other artists?
Tim: I come from the bottom of my heart in everything I write. You can’t re-create a Timbo song or lyric the way I do because you simply aren’t me and haven’t walked in my shoes. I believe in the soul of people and that is what people get from me-my heart and soul.
JF: I think my unique selling point is that coming from playing with four different groups in four different genres that we have support from a spread of demographics.
JA: What single or project are you currently pushing?
Tim: Our first single from our debut record as T&J is “Champion.”
JF: The most important release that we are currently pushing is the first single from our debut record as T&J “Champion”
JA: What is the philosophy by which you live by?
Tim: You gotta be yourself and follow your heart. You gotta know who you truly are. You gotta know where you are going and believe you are going to get there no matter what. “The fight is already won; you’re just going through the process” – Evander Holyfield
JF: Pretty much just to push the idea of community and having a good time through entertainment,
JA: Which artists have inspired you?
Tim: The greatest of all time of course have inspired me!! They include: Tupac, Eminem, Billy Joel, Ozzy Osbourne, Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Metallica, John Lennon, and there is one song by 4 non blondes that always sticks out to me. It’s called “What’s up” that I respect so much.
JF: Most importantly to me the way I usually answer this question is Skrillex haha. Otherwise The Dirty Heads and Sublime get the next two spots.
JA: Who does your production?
Tim: -Anthony Mirabella does the production.
JF: -Yes, for T&J our very awesome producer is Anthony Mirabella with The Practice Worldwide.
JA: What is your opinion of the current state of the music industry?
Tim: I think too many people are forgetting about looking inside of themselves and telling their story and expressing their perspective. There are too many wannabes.
JF: I personally love the current music industry. I think that there has literally never been a time where more genres, artists and fans have gotten the opportunity to crossover into each-other’s worlds. My best example is like every big music modern festival.
JA: If you can change one thing about the music industry what would it be and why?
Tim: I would just give credit to more artists that deserve it and stop giving phony people the spotlight. These people are in a position of power and can do great things but they are too blind or too weak to carry out the great message. Music moves the masses and I watch them move the masses into confusion more and more.
JF: Personally I wouldn’t change a thing, I know that it’s speculated that it’s more difficult to have success as an artist due to some over-saturation and lack of record sales at this point in time but I think it’s made for a whole new more hard working musician.
JA: Are there any singers that you would like to collaborate with in the future?
Tim: I would love to colab with Elton John. The soul of that man is just amazing and he knows how to make you feel his lyrics like none other. And ofcourse I look forward to one day working with the greatest of all time, Ozzy Osbourne.
JF: There are definitely some girl singers that I would love to collab with. I love Selena Gomez right now. I think Halsey is awesome and otherwise I would absolutely just love to work with some rappers like Kid Cudi or Ces Cru.
JA: What is your favorite movie and favorite book?
Tim: Dumb and Dumber is my favorite movie and “The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind” by Dr. Joseph Murphy is my favorite book.
JF: Well I definitely haven’t read a book in years but as far as movies go I love Star Trek and any kind of great sci-fi or Horror movie.
JA: What is your favorite part of your live show? How has it evolved?
Tim: I love the reaction that we receive from every crowd we come across. They absolutely love us and it fuels my soul to no end.
JF: I think it’s just the idea of feeling comfortable and getting to say whatever I want to a crowd and that’s definitely how it’s evolved for me over the years, I used to be a little hesitant on stage but then I realized that it’s what I love the most so let’s go haha.
JA: What is your EP or Album going to be like?
Tim: It’s going to have many songs that will be able to fit in the mainstream but still have the soul and feeling you look for while listening to great music.
JF: We are working on an full length album right now (as T&J) and what it’s going to be is a mainstream sounding record written to be on the radio with a lot of the collective influences from all the underground genres that Tim and I are involved in, like reggae, EDM, Jam rock etc.
JA: What is your website?
JA: Any final words for the people.
Tim: Dont live in fear. Stand up and do something great!! Be you! Don’t let what other people think or say hold you back from doing something you love. Live it up and love a whole lot.
JF: Yeah, enjoy your life, do whatever makes you happy, kick ass in the world and remember to smile.
