The Columns Museum in Milford, PA wants you to “Explore Your Options”. To that end, they invite everyone to come and meet CNN’s Alan Valdes.
Meet, dine, and have glass of wine with Alan and Gloria Valdes on February 27th at The Columns Museum. (608 Broad Street, in Milford, PA.)
“You may be familiar with Alan Valdes from his weekly appearances for CNN and CNBC where he reports as a business correspondent,” the press release on the event says. “Alan has been a licensed trader on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange for 35 years and his expertise is certainly a sought after commodity!”
Valdes’ easy going demeanor matched with his obvious knowledge of the markets and the underlying international political arena make him a favorite to check on the stock market floor. But this only scratches the surface of his life experiences.
“What you may not know is that Alan,” continues the information form the Pike County Historical Society’s release. “[I]s an adventurer at heart and has many other talents and accomplishments that take him as far away from the stock exchange floor as one can imagine.”
Valdes is an avid climber, summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, trekking to the base of Mt. Everest in Nepal. He has also climbed Mt. Blanc, Chamonix, France, studied poisonous dart tree frogs in the Amazon, traversed the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, sailed the Pacific and is a certified scuba diver.
Also being invited to speak is Gloria Valdes. Gloria is a Certified Personal Trainer who has summited the Breithorn in Switzerland, the Matterhorn, also in Switzerland, Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania as well as a winter ascent of Mt Washington in the U.S. She has trekked through the Amazon Jungle on an expedition to study poisonous dart tree frogs, as well as canoed its muddy river waters while fishing for Piranhas. She also trekked up the Inca Trail to an elevation of 13,800 feet while en route to Machu Picchu, Peru. Gloria is a certified SCUBA diver who sailed through the South Pacific and did some shark dives, “just for kicks.”
The event – “AN EXPLORER”S DINNER” (with Alan and Gloria regaling us with their tales of adventure) – will be held on Saturday February 27th at 6:30pm at The Columns Museum. The museum is located at 608 Broad Street in Milford, PA.
February 27 also marks the anniversary of the return, in 1935, of Pike County’s Arctic Explorer David Irwin. He was the first man to trek across the top of the world with only sled dogs to accompany him. According to Images of Pike County (c. 2009) by Lori Strelecki, Irwin’s trek encompassed 3600 miles and was considered the “year’s most thrilling true story.” Irwin settled down in Pike County and opened the North Pole Animal farm just outside Stroudsburg, PA.
Strelecki, who is also The Column’s museum director, will give a short presentation on Irwin to start off the evening; a chilling tale of survival for certain. Then enjoy a delicious four course meal. Alan and Gloria will speak after dinner, followed by a question and answer session, and dessert.
