Thanks to the efforts of a number of concerned citizens, led by Ms. Melanie Rosemberg, plus a group of donors who obviously adore animals, and the assistance of Animal Rescue Aid, almost 150 dogs at Miami-Dade Animal Services will be sleeping more comfortably starting Sunday. Earlier this month, Ms. Rosemberg sent out an email to her rescue contacts, and posted this GoFundMe, entitled Dog Beds for every dog at MDAS. Her goal was to raise almost $4,200 to purchase dog beds for the animals in that Florida kill shelter. She ran a similar fundraiser in 2011, and you can see from the photos taken that the dogs are definitely enjoying their beds. But four years later, shelter residents were definitely in need of new beds. Though they are durable and easy to clean, MDAS has had unimaginable numbers of dogs using those beds. So Melanie posted her plea.
In her email from December 1, she stated, “My goal is for every kennel to have a dog bed in time for the holidays! As we all know, so many dogs get dumped at the pound during the holidays. Being in a shelter is such a stressful time for any dog. We know that having a comfortable bed to lay on will help alleviate some of that stress. Right now, all they have is the cold concrete floor. Each medium bed costs $26, the large ones $28. They are being sold to us at cost and being shipped for free. Also, each bed comes with a free Kong dog toy!” And people responded very quickly; in 16 days, 74 people donated almost $4,500! Her initial goal was to purchase 142 beds, and she was able to bump that up to 148.
On Melanie’s Rescue Page, here on Facebook, she put out the word that she is now needing help on Sunday, December 20 to help put those beds together. The build-a-bed event will take place between 10 AM and 3 PM, at Miami-Dade Animal Services, 7401 NW 74th St. Fl 33166. Please bring Phillips-head screw drivers, powered works fastest but any will do, and some PAM cooking spray or baby powder to make it easier to slide the plastic onto the metal frame. If you have any questions, please contact Andrea at firstname.lastname@example.org, Melanie at email@example.com or Lubia at firstname.lastname@example.org.
