James McCleland topped the field on Tuesday (Feb. 9) in the second of a 10-week Champions Series scratch sweepers being conducted at AMF Gulf Gate Lanes.
McCleland prevailed in the title showdown with a 204-179 victory over Steve Baran. The winner trailed by one pin after six frames, but he pulled away with a turkey over the next three frames.
For the second consecutive week, there was a grind-out lane condition, and Baran — with scores of 152, 235 and 224 for a 611 series — was the only player to finish on the plus side of a 200 average in the three-game qualifying session.
Saul Insignares was the runner-up qualifier with a 583 series on scores of 180, 216 and 187, while McCleland finished third with 572 on games of 226, 156 and 190.
After the three-player cut to match play, McCleland and Baran advanced to the final with respective scores of 184 and 174, while Insignares was eliminated with 120. First-week champion Mike Thompson wasn’t in the Week 2 field.
The Champions Series is being conducted on the same format as the recent King Of Gulf Gate series, which concluded its 11-week run last month, and the third Champions sweeper will be held on Tuesday (Feb. 16). Entry fee into each weekly event is $20, and sign-up and registration begin at 6:15 p.m., with practice starting at 6:50 p.m. First place will pay a guaranteed $75, based on only 10 entries.
The format calls for three qualifying games on a modified house pattern, after which there will be a 1-in-5 cut, and the survivors will roll one game for the title (or force a cut to the top two for a final title-game showdown).
The series will continue to build toward a Week 11 finale, but in order to qualify for the final week, a bowler must enter at least six of the weekly events. There will be $2 set aside each week to be earmarked for the Week 11 prize fund. Brackets will be available, and for additional information, you may call Gary Gooch at 921-4447.
