The death of Michigan woman who was mauled by dogs was ruled as a suicide by a Michigan medical examiner. The medical examiner believes this mom deliberately climbed over a fence into a yard with pit bulls to become the victim of a fatal mauling. The ruling that 22-year-old Rebecca Hardy purposely ended her life in such a way is not sitting well with her loved ones today.
According to People Magazine on December 11, this ruling is not accepted by the people who knew Rebecca well, especially the man she was engaged to marry. Most would agree that you would have to be in a very strange state of mind to purposely orchestrate your death via a dog mauling.
If suicide is what you have in mind, there are so many other ways to end your life that are less violent and certainly less painful. People who commit suicide are most likely trying to put an end to pain, whether it be physical or emotional pain they are suffering from.
A dog mauling would not necessarily kill you as it offers a higher chance of survival for a victim in comparison to many of the usual ways people end their own lives. The authorities and the medical examiner took all the evidence they’ve collected into consideration when they made their determination of a suicide. Eye witness accounts along with Rebecca’s previous knowledge of the dogs contained within that fenced-in yard was what this ruling was based on.
The Detroit Free Press reports that not only were the two dogs involved in the mauling euthanized, but a pit bull-husky mix puppy was also put down. Rebecca had severe lacerations about the head and neck from the two older dogs, which is what killed her. It is not known why the puppy was also euthanized.
Rebecca was taken to a nearby hospital after she climbed over the home owner’s fence and was mauled by the pit bull dogs that lived there. Her friends and family believe she was doing nothing more than taking a shortcut home.
Matthew Grattan, Rebecca’s fiance and father of their 18-month-old daughter, is not accepting suicide as the cause of death. Grattan told the media:
“I, in no way, shape or form believe that she was looking to hurt herself on that day,” Grattan said. “She had a little girl…. She wanted us to be a family.” Medical Examiner Ljubisa Dragovic is adamant about the ruling. Some investigating showed that Rebecca attempted suicide in the past, according to Dragovic.
Rebecca knew the dogs were in that yard behind that fence reports the medical examiner. According to Dragovic: “She obviously was aware of that, because she climbed over the fence to subject herself to this threat.” The medical examiner also said that Rebecca had made an effort to avoid the dogs in the past by staying away from that yard when walking in the neighborhood.
Dragovic continued saying: “She did climb the fence over and enter that space. She did not get through a gate or through the front door of the house – and that clearly is a purposeful act. It’s akin to someone jumping into a cage with tigers or lions at a zoo.”
