“My one chance at fortune and glory and I released the world record.” During practice Matt Herren caught what could have been fortune enough to win. Herren caught an Ozark bass related to a rock bass from the sunfish family, and also known as a goggle-eye Sunday during practice. He took a picture of it and posted it on his Facebook page.
Two lakes in a different kind of format, we will see the Bassmaster Elite Series pros fishing on Bull Shoals on Friday after Lake Norfolk today. 108 anglers were on the water today and after tomorrow the field will be cut to 50 anglers. Which lake has the biggest fish?
The current world record for an Ozark bass is one-pound and one-ounce and it was caught by Dan Biery of Clinton, Arkansas, Norfolk Lake On May 12, 2014. How do we know all of this? Rick Pierce, a Mountain Home resident who also happens to be the president of BassCat Boats knows all about it. The fish is only found in White River chain of lakes-Beaver, Table Rock, Bull Shoals and Norfolk. You are never too old to learn something. The Ozark bass is fatter than a sunfish and it has googly eye that pop out. The tournament always has a wild card prize for the biggest fish and two years in a row the record has been broken.
Herren caught five fish in the tournament and they weighed 17-0. He also took the Big Bass Leader 6-1. That ought to put some gas in your can and there is nothing wrong with being confident. Fishing two lakes make put you in two different mindsets but it won’t be tidal fishing any more like it was on Winyah Bay. You can’t ignore water that is constantly changing and the need to run up river or down river to meet the needs of the fish. The outgoing tide is clear water and seeing them is believing and you could be thinking too much. What to throw and what color You can see here what the pros were using for lures and channel that guide for yourself.
Everyone is back in the water again tomorrow. Take off is 6:15 am CT At Bull Shoals Dock. Sundays take off is the same time except the pros will be back on Norfolk Lake again at the Marina. All of the weigh-ins will be held on the glorious campus of Arkansas State University in Mountain Home.
