Happy Thursday all!
Matrix has so many Artistic Directors like Nick Stenson, Chrystopher Benson, and Nicholas French. But Matrix SoColor celebrity stylist, George Papanikolas, has taken over as well. These stylists always know what’s trending in Hollywood and New York City, after all, they basically set the trends on these stars. Matrix SoColor celebrity stylist, George Papanikolas actually had the chance to sit down and answer some of the questions about his work and let Matrix pick at his thoughts.
Are there any trends you’re seeing as far as highlights right now?
People are always obsessed with the latest celebrity hair trends, and therefore are requesting the “Flash Effects” that happen on the red carpet. You don’t need a lot of highlights to get the look. Focusing around the face, natural part and ends gives this pop of color. So when you are taking pictures, you have an amazing effect.
Are there any celebrities with color (specifically highlighted looks) you really like or have lots of clients asking for?
Hannah Davis is my most requested look. It’s a combination of baby-lights at the root and crown area, with a few bolder pops of Balayage. The combo is the most modern, current and requested look.
Can you tell me a bit about hair contouring? How can someone use color to make her hair look thicker or change her face shape? Would Chrissy Teigen’s hair be an example of this effect?
Yes, most definitely. Hair contouring help create illusions of a wider or narrower face. By playing with light and dark tones you can create these illusions. Example is placing bright face framing pieces, with a deeper crown creates the illusion of a narrower face.
If someone would like to get neon/pastel underlights, what sort of process and maintenance should she be prepared for?
To get these looks you need to pre-lighten hair to a pale blonde first, then apply the neon/pastel over it. The tones fade fast so need constant refreshing. The look can be very harsh for those with naturally dark hair as the pre-lightening can damage the hair.
I’ve been hearing the term “compound coloring” a lot recently. Could you tell me what exactly that is? Is that a trend you’re seeing more of on celebrities?
Yes. Combining Different coloring techniques allows for a whole new modern approach to hair color. Example would be combing baby lights with Ombre. You see it on Hannah Davis, Jessica Alba, and Lauren Conrad.
Anything to add?
TIP: More color means more care, which means a weekly hair mask specific for color – treated hair like the MATRIX Biolage COLORLAST Mask which will keep color from fading and add lots of moisture.
